French designers Ronan and Erwan Bouroullec were born in Quimper, Brittany, in 1971 and 1976. Ronan studied at the École Nationale des Arts Décoratifs in Paris and Erwan at the École des Beaux-Arts in Cergy-Pontoise, and the brothers have worked together in their Paris studio since 1999.
The Bouroullecs are renowned for light, inventive designs that solve practical problems with grace. For Vitra they created the Slow chair, Belleville chair, Softshell chair and the Algues modular system, and for HAY the Palissade outdoor collection. Their work for Flos, Magis, Kvadrat and Nanimarquina ranges from lighting and textiles to rugs and office systems, and they have designed fountains for the Champs-Élysées in Paris.
Their work is held in museums including the Centre Pompidou and the Museum of Modern Art. The Bouroullecs helped define a gentle, poetic strand of 21st-century design that remains widely influential.
