We speak to Miriam “Mim” Fanning of multidisciplinary design studio Mim Design about her 12 Definitive Design products for 2025, including furniture, lighting, fixtures, accessories and kitchen appliances.
Our ‘Definitive Design Products’ series was first featured inside est magazine issue 56: ‘Living Connection’.
01. B&B Italia Up 50
Designed in 1969 by Italian architect and designer Gaetano Pesce for B&B Italia, the Up 50 is shaped as a female figure bound to a ball-shaped ottoman, symbolising “the shackles that keep women subjugated.” For Fanning, “the story of its creation is powerful, and to sit in it is immersive — comfort levels at a maximum.”
02. Edra Standard Sofa
“It’s the most comfortable sofa,” Fanning says of the Edra Standard, designed by Milan-born Francesco Binfaré. Handmade in Italy, its “smart cushions” allow for countless configurations. “You can create a very sculptural piece,” she adds.
03. Cassina 412 Cab Chair
The Cassina 412 Cab chair, designed by Italian architect and designer Mario Bellini for Cassina, is “a timeless and iconic piece that never dates,” Fanning says. Conceived as an extension of the human body, the design features a tubular steel skeleton clad in stretched leather.

04. Tiento Zellige Denim
Handmade by artisans in Morocco for Tiento, each Zellige Denim tile is individually cut and hand-glazed, with subtle tonal variations across its surface. “These tiles add a gentle dimension to any surface they’re installed on,” Fanning notes.
05. Apparatus Reprise Pendant
The Apparatus Reprise pendant by American designer Gabriel Hendifar features a mold-blown glass orb suspended by a delicate brass chain. “The design resonates with that of a microphone, with the delicacy of a jewelry-like suspension cable system,” Fanning says.
06. Arthur Vallin Chubby Coffee Table
Shaped like a folded noodle, the Chubby coffee table by French artist and designer Arthur Vallin stands out to Fanning for its lightness of form. “I personally love this table in travertine,” she says. “It almost looks like a softly folded blanket, but it’s actually a strong, bold piece.”

07. Spiggy Quincalux Palma Door Handle
“It’s beautifully designed and manufactured in Belgium,” Fanning says of the Palma door handle from the Quincalux collection at Spiggy. Made in high-quality brass and nickel finishes, it forms part of a “full coordination suite” that includes cabinet and window handles as well as accessories.
08. Behruz Studio Rugs
For Mim Design, Melbourne-based Behruz Rugs is the studio’s preferred supplier, valued for their ability to source the world’s finest materials. “They always deliver on customisation and quality,” Fanning explains. “Their tradition of crafting man-made pieces that portray a moment in time is hard to go past.”
09. Chris Wolston Cloud Lamp
Hand-cast in sand-textured aluminium and standing over 1.7 metres high, the Cloud lamp by American artist and designer Chris Wolston is, as Fanning describes, “a clever fabrication of intentional imbalance—a functional art piece in its own right”.

10. Alessi Kettle 9093
The Alessi 9093 kettle, designed by American architect and designer Michael Graves, draws on European art, American Pop and pre-Columbian culture to create its iconic form. “I love the singing bird whistle on the spout,” Fanning says.
11. Wolf M Series
The Wolf M Series is an aspiration for Fanning, who says she’d “love to have one.” With touch controls and 13 cooking modes, “they take the guesswork out and deliver every time,” she notes. “We love crafting kitchens with meaning when using this product.”
12. Brodware Tapware Range
When it comes to tapware, Fanning keeps it simple: “Brodware,” she says. “They’re Australian-made and their quality is superb.” With finishes ranging from inFinium PVD to electroplate and powder coat, Brodware offers options to suit any interior.
