Discover Handcrafted Tiles Inspired by Nature

Artedomus has a legacy of bringing unique, premium architectural surfaces from around the world to Australian shores – encompassing tiles, stone, and innovative surfaces. Their latest collection with renowned Italian tile brand Decoratori Bassanesi includes four distinct series of handcrafted tiles, each brought to fruition through collaborations with leading architects and designers.

Crafted with meticulous attention to detail, each tile within the collection embodies a sophisticated, minimalist approach to interior design. “The collection resonates with those seeking a connection to nature within their living spaces, with its earthy tones and delicate textures,” says Phil Brenton, Managing Director, Artedomus. “As a result, they harmonise beautifully with simple, modern spaces designed to evoke a sense of calm.” We explore the design philosophies behind each of the four series within the collection – Wabi-Sabi, Copenhagen, Segments, and Windy.

Wabi-Sabi by Federica Biasi

Inspired by the Japanese concept of ‘Wabi-Sabi’, this compilation of ceramic wall tiles by Italian designer Federica Biasi celebrates the beauty of small, natural imperfections. The series presents two unique yet complementary textures – ‘Wabi’ and ‘Sabi’. “Wabi boasts an intricate surface, inviting contemplation while imparting a warm and cocooning feel to any space. Sabi, by contrast, showcases a bold surface with simple, textural layers best appreciated from a distance,” says Phil. Wabi-sabi is offered across two differing dimensions and is available in five colourways.

Copenhagen by Norm Architects

Decoratori Bassanesi engaged Danish design studio Norm Architects to craft a series of tiles inspired by their home city. The series presents tiles in two textures: one linear and three-dimensional, featuring delicate furrows that create a beautiful tension of shadows, the other smooth to provide contrast.  “This allows designers and homeowners to get creative with their tile combinations, creating looks reminiscent of those you might see when wandering the streets of Copenhagen’s historic neighbourhoods – places packed with unique and imperfect details, which are also understated and welcoming,” says Phil. Suitable for interior walls and floors, these tiles are available in five earthy hues and a range of sizes from petite mosaics to 90x90cm tiles.

Segments by Guglielmo Poletti

Designed by emerging Italian designer Guglielmo Poletti, the ‘Segments’ series reimagines the concept of classic corrugated panels as refined interior wall tiles. Crafted from grès porcelain – a durable, dense ceramic renowned for its rich hues – the tiles showcase narrow lines that capture the intersection of light and shadow throughout the day. “From a distance, the tiles may present a simple, geometric pattern, but a closer look reveals each as a miniature landscape of peaks and valleys. This intricate detail imbues interior walls with a sculptural and playful essence,” says Phil. The series offers two distinctive patterns and is available in five serene colours and two sizes.

Windy by Nendo

Decoratori Bassanesi enlisted the expertise of Oki Sato, head designer and founder of Japanese design studio Nendo, to craft the ‘Windy’ selection, inspired by the intricate ripples, swirls, and patterns created by the wind as it traverses water or rice paddies. “Precise, capsule-shape grooves in lines and swirls create a gentle patchwork effect that brings instant serenity to a space. Deceptively simple in their execution, the tiles required meticulous craftsmanship to perfect,” says Phil. Throughout the design process, various chisels and drills of different shapes and sizes were employed to etch grooves into smooth plaster, revealing how subtle variations in depth and cross-section alter the play of shadows. This range comprises four patterns and four soft neutral tones.
