A Noosa Residence in Sync With its Surroundings

  • Perched overlooking the Noosa hinterland, Whipbird is a poetic response to its natural environment cultivated from an architectural approach that employs connection and permanence.

When Zerni founder and property developer Jayden Zernich, approached award-winning architect Jen Negline of Minnow Studio and the Atelier team from Space Furniture, the design for a luxurious new home on the Sunshine Coast soon took shape. Focusing on expansive volumes, abundant natural light, and an enduring curation of furniture and furnishings, the goal was to establish an equilibrium between the interior, the site’s natural surroundings and the panoramic views of the tropical hinterland

The driving force for the architectural team at Minnow Studio was to design a Brutalist-inspired residence atop a natural ridgeline overlooking the lush Noosa hinterland. Offering a deliberate contrast to conventional rural architectural concepts, Minnow Studio set out to craft a home characterised by robust linear forms that expand outwards along the crest across two distinct wings.

Clad in black-stained New Zealand timber and featuring soft-grey, recycled bricks, materiality and form were pivotal to creating a peaceful refuge from the outside world while anchoring the home to its unique location. The surrounding native garden by landscape architects Conlon Group further blends the home’s solid aesthetic into its soft surroundings. Whipbird’s landscaped terraces connect to all the outdoor amenities, including a pool, tennis court, bathing court, car court, and courtyard gardens.

Inside, Whipbird encompasses five bedrooms and is divided into two separate wings spanning two levels. Access to the ground floor is through a double-height volume that captures the serene view beyond and sets the tone for the rest of the home. While the first wing accommodates the living zones, main bedroom suite, and a sunlit home office, the second wing is oriented towards the forest and houses additional bedrooms, bathrooms, a guest suite, and a games room.

The home’s palette is resilient and raw, spotlighting material tactility, texture, pattern and geometry. Ocean Blue Travertine, originating from a single quarry in Italy, creates a reoccurring and grounding thread through the main communal spaces.

Sharing a unique passion and respect for materials and finishes, Zerni enlisted the help of a formidable team of designers, suppliers, and collaborators to bring the Whipbird home to life. For Jayden and his team, furniture, and artwork were always going to be an important part of the concept. Zerni collaborated with Space’s Atelier team; an in-house design team dedicated to providing interior solutions from furniture to lighting, wall treatments, art curation, and styling for clients who are seeking a complete interior solution for their home.

Space Asia Pacific’s head of interiors and business development, David Hartikainen, worked closely with Zerni and Minnow Studio across eight months to furnish the entire home. “It was a collaborative approach, understanding the importance of the architecture and all the finishes and fixtures. There was a sense of confidence and clarity from the start,” David says, who aimed to furnish the interior to enhance the home’s individuality while celebrating the dramatic architecture of the home and its breathtaking views. “It was clear from the outset that the architecture and the stunning viewpoints on the coast were to remain the protagonist with this project, and the interior and fit-out should be approached with a respectful and understated brief.”

“The blend of colours and materials from designers including B&B Italia, Arflex and Poliform, combine to provide moments of contrast and highlight, with the overarching aim being to provide a space that weaves comfort and luxury into the fabric of the home itself.”

Having exclusive access to the world’s leading furniture and lighting brands enabled Space’s Atelier team to tailor an elevated interior design solution that responds to the architecture, the extraordinary site, and the luxurious finishes of the Whipbird residence – including access to a range of iconic and timeless pieces.

“The blend of colours and materials from designers, including B&B Italia, Arflex, and Poliform, combine to provide moments of contrast and highlight, with the overarching aim being to provide a space that weaves comfort and luxury into the fabric of the home itself,” David says. Each of the interior inclusions has been selected for its luxury materials and finishes and world-class production that blends state-of-the-art manufacturing with centuries-old craftsmanship to enhance the lives of the home’s residents.

Iconic pieces specified by the Atelier team include the B&B Italia Alanda coffee table and Arflex Marenco sofa both featured in the main living space. “The Marenco sofa is low profile and structured in its pillowed-cushioned form. The use of the burnt orange velvet in the living space is a nice way to add an element of excitement without necessarily having it dominate the area,” David says.

“The Alanda coffee table form plays on the beauty and simplicity of its inverted pyramid frame as its element of beauty with a bright edged glass top, two very simple elements which find its relationship within the structure and architecture of the home”. The Mart chair (deemed a future classic by Hartikainen) was placed in the secondary living space. It provides the perfect silhouette on approach and with an interesting contrast between its structured geometric frame, balanced by organic curves.

The burst of colours and subdued material provides moments of contrast and highlights within a home that weaves comfort and luxury into the house’s fabric. “The house was conceived to attract an international market and those who understand the much larger design picture, whether it’s architecture, furniture, art or fashion,” Jayden reflects.
