Home Tour | Santa Ynez Valley Home by Corinne Mathern

Inspired by the serene landscape of Southern California’s enchanting wine country, Santa Ynez Valley Home by Corinne Mathern is a visual delight deeply rooted in the essence of its natural surroundings.

Located in Los Olivos, California — a picturesque region in Santa Barbara Country known and loved for its vineyards, wineries, and rural charm — Santa Ynez Valley Home is expansive and responsive, both to the needs of its owners and to the natural beauty it exists within.

“When I drove the hour up to the valley to visit the property and meet our clients for the first time, it was a breath of fresh air,” recalls interior designer Corinne Mathern, who restored the timeless charm of this 1980s Californian home. “The drive to Santa Ynez Valley always gives me life and I love working on properties in such a bucolic setting,” she adds.

With a charming horizontal layout surrounded by olive trees, horses, emus and vineyards, the design approach for the 325 sqm 3-bedroom home leans into the undeniable warmth of a ranch-style aesthetic.

“Our client had designed multiple pieces throughout the home that we loved and were so inspired by,” Corinne says. “[The powder room] has an incredible carved rock sink that our client had made previously; we paired it with a simple, custom table and sconces to let it shine — I LOVE that room,” she adds.

The kitchen and dining area features Flagstone floors, Aria Quartzite stone, and an island in smoked oak with oak butcher block top by Lotus Cabinetry.

Working with a detail-orientated finishing contractor lovingly nicknamed ‘Maestro’, the homeowners entrusted the one-man-show with the intricate stone patterns and plaster finishes; a slow but sure two-year process of artful finishes and craftsmanship.

“The clients brought great inspiration and were highly collaborative—their existing collection of objects and their passion for creating a home that was layered with history, stories, and a collected feel were easy inspiration for us,” Corinne concludes.

The living room features original pine wood floors, vintage Michael Taylor upholstered in Pierre Frey Teddy Mohair, a custom-designed coffee table by the homeowner, and a floor lamp designed by Peter Koehler.

A colour palette of natural wood tones, muted cream plaster, and layers of shades of grey stones and tiles create a contemporary yet warm ambience. The living room’s sole accent of colour is a Michael Taylor sofa reupholstered in sky-blue Pierre Frey mohair. “The house had incredible, original pine floors that established a base, a soul, and a jumping-off point for the design,” Corinne muses.

Art and craftsmanship were key in bringing the vision to life for this dream home in the countryside. When the designer was brought on board, the homeowners already had a collection of iconic furniture pieces —a welcome base from which to work. “I felt the ‘spark’ that I do with a client and a home when I know it’s a project that my team and I are the best fit for and can make come to life.”

One of Corinne’s favourite spaces in the home, the powder room features original pine floors, custom oak doors by Wildwood, Rocky Mountain Hardware, and a stone vessel sink on a custom oak pedestal. The space also features VOLA tapware and Workstead sconces.

The primary bathroom features tapware by John Pawson for Cocoon and silver travertine finishes.

The guest bathroom features a Kreoo marble vessel sink.
