St Kilda Residence by Studio Doherty
Wurundjeri Woi Wurrung and Bunurong Country / Melbourne, Australia
Colour takes centre stage in St Kilda Residence, where Studio Doherty has embraced its past through a fresh, contemporary lens. “Rather than shunning the home’s colourful past, its best aspects were heartily embraced,” Studio Doherty director Mardi Doherty reflects, as seen in the two existing bathrooms—one featuring intense orange and the other vivid blue mosaic tiles.
The all-red theatre room is where Studio Doherty’s way with colour is particularly evident, featuring glossy red cabinetry that was initially designed as a wall of shallow drawers for the previous owners’ CD collection, vivid walls and a cherry red sofa with slightly softer-hued carpet, ensuring every element complements each other. “Overall, the home feels fun and retro, which contrasts beautifully with the home’s heritage without being discordant—it really is the best of both worlds,” Doherty says.
Haus of Hommeboys Showroom by Hommeboys
California, North America
Design-build studio Hommeboys, founded by Austin Carrier and Alex Mutter-Rottmayer with its own millwork and furniture atelier, have brought their signature design approach to life through their Haus of Hommeboys showroom. Rooted in the design ethos of ‘Art as Objects’, the showroom highlights their latest Ocotillo collection, which was inspired by the organic, yet angular lines of Anthroposophical design and nature.
The collection draws particular inspiration from the warm hues of Sonoma County’s burnt landscape after the Los Angeles wildfires, complemented by the showroom’s moody, dark burgundy palette. The dark, earthy material selection includes glossy brown Zia tiles, rich marble from Carmel Stone Imports, burl timber veneer from GL Veneer, and sustainable rugs from Armadillo that create depth, texture, and a natural warmth.
Silver Lake Renovation by Charlap Hyman & Herrero
Los Angeles, North America
Based in Los Angeles and New York, architecture and interior design studio Charlap Hyman & Herrero approached their bathroom renovation in Silver Lake, Los Angeles with colour, texture and materiality in mind. The amber glass blocks, which frame a bespoke steel sink and extra-deep bathtub, filter the incoming natural light and bathe the entire room in warm hues that shift throughout the day. The mosaic-tiled walls intensify this effect, casting a marigold yellow hue throughout that mirrors the warm sunlight of ‘golden hour’ and the earthy Californian landscape beyond.
Luna House by Leeton Pointon Architects and CJH Studio
Wurundjeri Woi Wurrung and Bunurong Country / Melbourne, Australia
Leeton Pointon Architects has used materiality, colour, and texture engage in fluent dialogue to delineate distinct zones within Luna House. Softly finished plastered walls facilitate the flowing movement, enabling light to reflect throughout the spaces and adding depth and warmth.
Colour is used sparingly but with intention to define spaces, enhanced by expressive furnishings and lighting curated by CJH Studio. For example, the living room and study are drenched in a rich marine blue, creating a sense of reclusion from the other living spaces, where a brass cabinet introduces a reflective light quality. Complementing the deep blue plastered walls and carpets, the space features pieces in monochromatic blue hues, such as the Baxter Piaf sofa, Pierre Paulin Groovy lounge chair in Pierre Frey fabric, Pipeline coffee table, Glas Italia PIP24 and a Classicon Bell side table.
Monsieur G by Decus
Gadigal Country / Sydney, Australia
Through a considered, client-centred approach, Decus have transformed a 1940s home in Sydney’s east into a captivating family home. Approaching each space as an opportunity to capture the clients’ personalities, the homes’ wine cellar is painted in a soft Eucalyptus green. It has been dressed with complementary elements: travertine floor tiles, an Apparatus sconce, a Knoll table and chairs, and a painting of the same palette.
By engaging with the site’s natural beauty, layering different materials and tones, and always striving to capture the owner’s identity, Decus has realised a captivating home that encompasses all the senses.
Bay Blue by Hugh-Jones Mackintosh
San Francisco, North America
Through a measured approach to the interiors, Sydney-based interior design studio Hugh-Jones Mackintosh were able to realise the clients’ vision for a “sanctuary in the shape of a home”. With a particular focus on colour, the home’s palette consists of mostly natural and neutral materials punctuated by somewhat unexpected hues.
Notably, different shades of blue and green were used to evoke a sense of calm while paying homage to San Francisco’s Bay Area coast. This is revealed in the study, painted a royal blue, and the master bedroom, painted a sage green; and the bar room, painted deep teal-blue. The clients’ affinity with the colour blue is revealed through this space, featuring a custom integrated bar clad in blue onyx to match the walls.
