A sculptural play of curves by Leeton Pointon Architects creates a sense of retreat, offering privacy from the suburban streetscape while enveloping its owners in a secluded oasis.
Alluring and sinuous forms define Leeton Pointon’s residential designs, becoming a signature hallmark of the studio’s architectural identity. Echoing this dramatic movement, Luna House employs curves to provide privacy from the Melbourne home’s suburban streetscape.
Seeking a home that would evolve with their growing family, the owners desired a design that balanced functionality with enduring sophistication. “They wanted a home that could offer both durability and elegance, ensuring it remains a welcoming sanctuary for their family of five,” Leeton Pointon director Michael Leeton says.
The curved exterior offers a delicate balance of privacy and protection, while inside, the spaces flow seamlessly, creating an interconnected series of carefully curated living zones. Volume is used theatrically: a double-height void showcases a sweeping serpentine staircase, which separates the living and private areas across the two floors.
The dining room features a custom-designed CJH Studio table in marble from GLUX with Cassina Indochine swivel chairs tucked under and an Astep Model 2065 pendant.
The formal living room features a Baxter Piaf sofa and Pierre Paulin Groovy lounge chair in Pierre Frey fabric, with a Pipeline coffee table, Glas Italia PIP24 and a Classicon Bell side table, and Valerie Objects Standing lamp N1.
While the exterior shields the home like a fortress, the glazing is choreographed and optimised to ensure no space is deprived of natural light. “An open-glazed ground-floor plane exploits the site’s garden aspect, while the first floor provides carefully curated views to the garden below,” Leeton explains. Twig screens work in harmony with the curves, tempering the monolithic façade and “softening the light inside while offering privacy from adjacent neighbours,” Leeton adds.
Materiality, colour, and texture engage in fluent dialogue to delineate distinct zones within the home. Softly finished plastered walls facilitate the flowing movement, enabling light to reflect throughout the spaces and adding depth and warmth.
Colour is used sparingly but with intention to define spaces, enhanced by expressive furnishings and lighting curated by CJH Studio. The living room and study are drenched in a marine blue, creating a sense of reclusion from the other living spaces, where a brass cabinet introduces a reflective light quality. A forest green carpet leads the ascent of the staircase, guiding towards the upper floor, dedicated to the family bedrooms. Forest green continues in the ensuite, where Esmeralda Quartzite graces the countertops and backsplash, and mosaic tiles line the walls. These emerald tones contrast with the brass cabinetry and fixtures, creating a harmonious dialogue with the lower ground.
The entryway is illuminated with a Matter Made Puffball floor lamp designed by Faye Toogood.
Sustainable features are seamlessly integrated into the core of the design, discreetly enhancing its functionality. “These include passive ventilation, acoustic and thermal insulation, concealed solar panels, underground water tanks, thermal massing, and LED lighting,” Leeton says.
Luna House offers a quiet sanctuary where architecture, interiors, and landscape are intricately woven together, granting its owners the rare ability to live in seclusion, even within an urban neighbourhood.
A Pierre Paulin Groovy lounge chair in Pierre Frey from Modern ID and Nocturnal Lighting floor lamp in matte brass sit bedside the serpentine staircase.
The primary bedroom features a Ligne Roset Ruche bed with an Apparentt bedside table in American oak and Apparatus bedside lamps.
The poolside is accessorised with a pink Roly Poly chair designed by Faye Toogood and Paola Lenti pink Calatini mushroom side table.
The outdoor entertaining area features a Coco Flip custom Sequence dining table with Eco Outdoor Arc dining chairs tucked under. Also featured is a pair of Paola Lenti Smile armchairs upholstered in Aero fabric with a black B&B Italia Tobi-Ishi coffee table.
