Architect Adam Kane designs Grey House—a secluded family retreat in Daylesford, Victoria—as a pure integration of landscape and architecture. Tucked within a valley and backing onto a forest reserve, the half-acre site feels worlds away from town. Rather than perch the home on a hill for views, Kane immersed it within garden. Every corridor ends in a window. Every turn reveals a new outlook — a shift in light, texture or seasonal colour. Though minimal, the home is far from sterile.

A carefully considered floor plan replaces the typical open-plan glass box with a sequence of spaces that meander, each with its own atmosphere. Embedded window frames intensify the connection to landscape, while natural light creates a soft shimmer across adjoining walls, ceilings and floors. Clad entirely in Dulux grey polished plaster, the interiors reflect light while maintaining depth and texture. Flush, handleless joinery allows appliances to disappear — central to the kitchen and adjoining butler’s pantry.

The only visible element is a custom stainless steel island in a scoured finish, fitted with a sculptural PITT cooktop. “The kitchen is designed as a social space,” Kane says, a place for Sunday pasta-making and wine with friends. Appliances were carefully curated rather than sourced from a single brand: integrated refrigeration with concealed ventilation, a knock-to-open dishwasher hidden within the pantry block, and precision cooktops selected for both performance and design integrity. Custom stainless steel continues into the ensuite and powder room, alongside a freestanding bath.

Furnishings are deliberately restrained, allowing the Living Divani Extrasoft sofa in Kvadrat grey fabric to anchor the living room beneath a suspended fireplace. In the enclosed courtyard opposite the kitchen, a heated plunge pool and outdoor fireplace sit alongside Swisspearl Willy Guhl Loop chairs — extending the home’s quiet material palette outdoors. Designed as an antidote to chaos and distraction, Grey House is introspective yet liveable—a secluded bunker shaped through movement, light and landscape.
