Designer Focus | Pipkorn Kilpatrick’s Modern Melbourne Kitchens

  • We explore how interior design studio Pipkorn Kilpatrick have taken their signature contemporary style to three inner-Melbourne homes.

    Pipkorn Kilpatrick founders Anna Skermer (formerly Pipkorn) and Jane Kilpatrick are known for their modern yet relaxed take on Australian residential design – specifically, their hold on Melbourne heritage renovations. Describing their design approach as “clean, innovative and time-resistant”, Pipkorn Kilpatrick’s ethos is simple; as Anna Skermer puts it, “great design does not dominate, but enhances and inspires the life that goes on inside.”

    In this feature, we learn the hallmarks of a Pipkorn Kilpatrick kitchen – from form through to layout and appliances – and how natural light underpins each project the pair completes.

    Fitzroy Terrace

    This Edwardian terrace in Fitzroy was cofounder Jane Kilpatrick’s former home and also Pipkorn Kilpatrick’s first completed project. The narrow white brick, single-fronted home followed the same constraints often presented in homes of this era; limited natural light, pokey rooms and disjointed flow. With some considered rearrangements, the new kitchen now resides at the rear of the home, where large bi-fold doors extend this cooking and entertaining space into the courtyard.

    To maximise space, the designers implemented a clever open pantry in the kitchen, doubling as a study nook or additional storage. A single bench against the wall is positioned under a skylight and clad in Carrara marble – one of Pipkorn Kilpatrick’s favourite kitchen materials. “We use Carrara marble a lot for its beauty, softness and timeless character,” Jane explains. “It doesn’t try to steal the show – instead, it cultivates a gentle elegance that pairs beautifully with more earthy materials, including timbers and concrete.”

    Kitchen appliances needed to live up to the sleek, functional and reliable criteria. As a result, Pipkorn Kilpatrick specified the Bosch Series 6, 60cm built-in oven, Bosch Series 6, 60cm semi-integrated dishwasher and Bosch Series 6, 60cm gas cooktop. The stainless steel of these appliances lends itself to the laidback aesthetic of the home and becomes an integral part of the kitchen palette.

    A statement Blackwood island bench takes prime position in this Prahran kitchen, set against a backdrop of soft grey and cream cabinetry.

    Anna Skermer attests that the two most important aspects of a kitchen are natural light and a design that prioritises function and promotes togetherness. “The kitchen should always be a ‘coming together’ place, not one person stowed away on their own,” Anna adds. The Prahran House kitchen features two of Pipkorn Kilpatrick’s trademarks – Carrara marble and skylights – coaxing the previous dated design into the present.

    Here, a statement Blackwood island bench takes prime position in the kitchen, set against a backdrop of soft grey and cream cabinetry. This grey joinery follows through into the adjacent living space, subtly linking both spaces as one. 

    The designers selected the Bosch Series 8 oven, Bosch Series 4 integrated dishwasher and Bosch Series 6 natural gas cooktop for the light-filled kitchen. “The premium Bosch Series 8 products are great value for innovation and quality. However, their base level appliances are high performing and long-lasting,” Anna explains. In addition, to combat the previous home’s severe lack of storage, Pipkorn Kilpatrick went against the grain of the typical under-counter oven placement, instead tucking the oven into the corner and making way for wider drawers.

    On a tight 118-metre square block, this one-bedroom Victorian terrace has been transformed into a spacious, all-white home for a family of four to grow up in. The first floor’s footprint remains relatively the same, in line with heritage restrictions, with a lightweight structure introduced upstairs containing a primary bedroom and ensuite opening up onto a private deck, a study and an additional bedroom.

    The compact galley kitchen at the rear of the home takes on an unpretentious white and grey colour palette, set against a backdrop of white bagged brick. Jane Kilpatrick says this honest space required appliances of the same nature; robust and accessible. “Bosch home appliances are just this – well designed, paired back and not full of novelty,” Jane adds. So the team specified the Bosch Series 6, 60cm electric built-in oven and Bosch Series 6, fully-integrated dishwasher, neatly concealed within white cabinetry with cutout joinery pulls.
