Home Tour | Dames Blanches by etudes

Belgian architecture and design practice études unveils its first residential renovation, ‘Dames Blanches’, designed as a subtle and efficient blend of old and new.

Dedicated to celebrating knowledge and care, études seek to create serene spaces while honouring the past and its environment. Exemplifying this ethos, this carefully restored Brussels home showcases études’ thoughtful approach to honouring the home’s original structure while adapting to modern requirements. Aiming to preserve as much of the original design as possible, the project took a new direction after asbestos was discovered, necessitating a sensitive and measured approach to the renovation.

Guided by the homeowner’s lifestyle and needs, the design preserves and enhances key elements to create a coherent dialogue between the existing architecture and contemporary interventions. Carefully considered modifications were made to enhance spatial flow and improve circulation. The layout adjustments, though subtle, play a vital role in ensuring the home flows naturally, with each room connecting harmoniously.

The material palette instils a sense of calm and allows textures and natural elements to take centre stage. The removal of wooden boards upstairs due to asbestos was managed with precision, and the remaining materials were chosen for warmth and simplicity. “Our priority was to maintain as much of our original concept as possible, particularly elements like the monolithic features that offered a strong architectural statement across both levels,” études founder Karine Szekeres explains.

By utilising the original materials and celebrating their raw and tactile qualities, Brutalist elements emerged. “Focusing on tactility and material integrity, we aimed to create a space that feels both grounded and inviting,” the designer adds. This restrained approach directs attention to the home’s large windows, inviting views of the lush surroundings and providing a tranquil backdrop to daily life.

Through careful preservation and enhancement, études has transformed ‘Dames Blanches’ into a quiet, grounded retreat that thoughtfully addresses contemporary needs. Every detail reflects a subtle beauty in its commitment to cohesion, comfort, and timeless design.

“The use of monochromatic tones allowed for a serene backdrop, accentuating textures and natural materials,” études founder Karine Szekeres says.

By stripping back the layers, the original features were uncovered, and aspects such as the concrete ceilings, integrated timber windows, and patterned oak floors were enhanced.
