Bringing Sustainability to the Fore in the Bathroom

  • We shed light on three premium Italian brands spearheading sustainable design in the bathroom.

Fantini, Falper and Catalano are all recognisable names in the bathroom, known for their superior Italian craftsmanship and classic design aesthetic. At the same time, they are defined by their environmentally conscious efforts to design bathroom products that are better for people and the planet. We spotlight these three brands, available exclusively at Rogerseller in Australia, on how they’re actively paving the way for a more sustainable future.

For more than 70 years, Italian tapware brand Fantini has led the way for quality, sustainable design in the bathroom. The family-run business is located on Italy’s picturesque Lake Orta, so naturally, they are passionate about water – and their impact on the environment. But it isn’t just their consideration for the planet’s health – but also people’s wellbeing that drives Fantini.

Fantini’s 316 stainless steel and Australian-grade brass fixtures are long-lasting and corrosion-resistant, following a philosophy of ‘buy once, buy well’. When they eventually reach the end of their lifespan in the bathroom, Fantini products can be repurposed or recycled. Longevity is also reflected in the PVD (Physical Vapour Deposition) finishes. A case in point is the Icona range designed by Belgian design aesthete Vincent Van Duysen that reveals the importance of intermingling design, innovation and sustainability for Fantini.

Italy’s Falper is an equally-renowned authority in bathroom design, a brand passionate about the designers and artisans they work with to create their refined product range. Falper pride themselves on their original designs – but also the fact that their bathroom furniture, washbasins and bathtubs are original, by way of being handmade in Italy.

Falper is committed to using natural materials and naturally-derived engineered composite materials such as Ceramilux and Cristalplant. These materials are extremely durable, easy to clean and resistant to heat and scratches – meaning the products are designed to last for many years. But a scratch or break in a bathtub or washbasin doesn’t spell the end; rather the surface can be restored. When the product is no longer usable, it can also be completely recycled. In line with their prioritisation of natural materials, everything in the Falper range is water-based, hypoallergenic and non-toxic, including the oil and natural wax treatment of timber veneer products.

Catalano is a front runner in advancing product performance and minimising environmental impact, known for their Italian-made ceramic bathroom products. Catalano follows a ‘think green’ philosophy from product design to manufacturing to the end product, earning an environmental product declaration (EPD). The declaration ensures they have environmental control of their product lifecycle, abiding by international standards.

At the manufacturing level, they operate out of a sole plant north of Rome, reducing the cost of logistics and materials and their environmental footprint. Catalano also invests in solar power and has introduced policies for lowering water consumption while revolutionising their own ceramic waste recycling plant revolutionises what happens to waste products.

Standouts in the Catalano product range are their certified water-saving toilets. Their Newflush® powerful vortex system uses water to its full potential, maximising flushing and reducing water usage with cleaning technology – a win for the consumer and the environment.

All of Catalano’s sanitaryware, including the Catalano Green Lux basins, also feature Cataglaze+, a new ceramic glaze that means less detergent (fewer pollutants) and less water used, through powerful antimicrobial properties that kill 99.9% of bacteria. This ceramic glaze leans into the duality of sustainability and technological innovation that Catalano has forged a reputation globally for.
