First Light: Super Nova Sky Villa by State of Craft

A penthouse of scale and prestige at One Sydney Harbour finds itself anchored by a strong, persuasive materiality in direct response to the natural beauty found in its harbour setting.

When your practice is called State of Craft, there is a promise inherent in the name and occasionally a project comes along that allows its full, glorious expression. Daniel Goldberg, founder of the multidisciplinary design studio with offices in London, Ottawa and Sydney, works at the intersection of architecture and interior design, and found that opportunity with the commission for the penthouse at One Sydney Harbour. It took a while—12 years, in fact—but the result is a Gesamtkunstwerk, the German term for a total work of art. Goldberg shaped the floor plan, created the interior shell, and furnished it with custom and commissioned pieces, rare finds, curated art, bespoke rugs, ceramics and glassware. At 900 square metres, it is an enormous space, and yet there is intimacy and intrigue, awe, craft and a singular engagement with place.
