Stylist Claire Delmar’s 3daysofdesign 2024 Highlights

Australian stylist Claire Delmar shares ten memorable brands, designers and pieces from this year’s 3daysofdesign in Copenhagen.

Ladies & Gentlemen Studio

‘Enter the Salon’ Exhibition

During 3daysofdesign Danish designer Signe Hyett curated a group exhibition, ‘Enter the Salon’, hosting seven different international brands in a townhouse called ‘The Conary’. One such brand was North American lighting company Ladies & Gentlemen Studio, which launched new collections, Altostratus and Veil Tapestry, as part of the exhibition. “The softness of the Altostratus pendant allowed for playing with scale while maintaining a calm feel in the space,” Delmar says. The Altostratus collection was inspired by the way ‘sunlight filters through cloud formations’.

The Lucent Bench by All the way to Paris

‘Studies of a Bench’ Exhibition by &Tradition

Founded in Copenhagen, furniture and lighting brand &Tradition created a follow-up to their previous hybrid art-design exhibition, ‘Studies of a Table’ with ‘Studies of a Bench’. The exhibition invited five global designers and studios to design a contemporary expression of the bench. The Lucent bench caught Delmar’s eye, designed by the graphic design studio All the Way to Paris (ATWTP) and crafted in Copenhagen from Swedish fir. “The Lucent bench immediately drew my attention with its dramatic colour, and upon closer inspection, I noticed that its form changed dynamically as I moved around it, casting beautifully crafted light shafts.”

Kristina Dam Studio

‘Journeys’ Exhibition

Danish designer and architect Kristina Dam invited visitors to immerse themselves in her studio’s ‘sculptural minimalism’ at their exhibition ‘Journeys’. The exhibition was located in the historic centre of Copenhagen, introducing the designer’s latest collection, including the Solitude lounge chair, inspired by her travels from Copenhagen to Naoshima. “While not part of the launch collection, I was drawn to the artwork’s monochromatic palette [pictured] and the fabric’s connection to the frame,” Delmar adds.

Salem Charabi

‘A Thousand Moons’ Exhibition

‘A Thousand Moons’ saw Danish-Egyptian architect Salem Charabi share 38 works, all completed over two years for a private residence in California. The furniture series was presented on shipping crates in the architect’s workshop shortly before departing to California. “The pieces were mesmerising, showcasing craftsmanship beyond Charabi’s years,” Delmar says. “They exuded delicacy with a wabi-sabi aesthetic.”

Albireo Sofa by Anthony Guerrée for De La Espada

‘Crafted to Last’ Exhibition

Portuguese wood furniture brand De La Espada joined forces with Danish brand Garde Hvalsøe on the exhibition, ‘Crafted to Last’ for 3daysofdesign 2024. Presented in the Garde Hvalsøe showroom and curated by stylist Pernille Vest, the exhibition explored the brands’ shared values of traditional woodworking and thoughtfully designed products. De La Espada also took the opportunity to present their new Albireo sofa system by Anthony Guerrée. “Craftsmanship at its best,” Delmar says of the new Albireo sofa system. “The detailing in the legs and the high back for comfort make it a piece I will definitely specify for future clients.”

New Works Residence

Danish design company New Works timed the opening of their ‘New Works Residence’ with this year’s 3daysofdesign. Only steps away from their old showroom, the new space presented unseen designs and international collaborations with artisans and designers that conveyed ‘a love of the sensual and bold’. Delmar says the Tenon lounge chair by Spanish designer Omayra Maymó was a standout piece. “The blend of comfort and clean lines is complemented by the combination of oak timber and materials that soften the frame’s harder lines.”

Mattina Desk by Danielle Siggerud

‘Resilience’ Exhibition by Knothouse

While not a new piece, Delmar defined the Mattina desk by Danielle Siggerud, presented at Copenhagen rug studio and store Knothouse, as a highlight for its materiality and form. The a-symmetrical desk “symbolised how two parts can be individual but incomplete on their own,” Delmar says. “Together, the two separate tabletops, supported by tree trunks, formed a complete unit. – a metaphor for the unity of two people.” Delmar notes the desk was originally designed as a wedding gift from the designer to her husband, “embodying the concept and love and unity in its design,” she adds.

‘The Apartment’ Exhibition

Ask Og Eng is a Norway-based architecture and design studio specialising in handmade bamboo interiors, kitchens and furniture. For their first 3daysofdesign exhibit, Ask Og Eng invited guests into ‘The Apartment’ – a ‘living, breathing Ask Og Eng home’ in central Copenhagen. The space featured their latest kitchen design, ‘A Collection’, as well as their handcrafted bamboo furniture and object collection, with new elements to launch later in the year. “This was a highlight, particularly for the overall feel of the apartment and the clever ways of maximising small spaces,” Delmar reflects. “The joinery was simple yet highly functional.”

Emerson Bailey

‘Centuries’ Exhibition

Montana-based gallery Emerson Bailey is renowned for curating contemporary and vintage Nordic design pieces. They exhibited at 3daysofdesign Copenhagen for the first time with their exhibition ‘Centuries’. The exhibition was staged within a historic building in Copenhagen’s centre dating back to 1807 that once housed the Danish craftsmen’s association. “I was blown away as I arrived at the top of the staircase of a building site that felt precarious and in need of a hard hat,” Delmar says. The exhibition traced influential moments in Scandinavian design, such as the Age of Enlightenment and mid-century modernity.

‘DESIGN/DIALOGUE’ Exhibition

LA-based lighting and furniture brand Atelier De Troupe showcased their latest design pieces at the exhibition ‘DESIGN/DIALOGUE’, curated by Ark Journal and Ark Kollekt for 3daysofdesign Copenhagen. Atelier De Troupe’s Pedregal daybed was a highlight for Clare, inspired by Mexican-modern architecture of the 1940s, in particular, Luis Barragan’s project, ‘Jardines del Pedregal de San Angel’. “Solid yet still managing to be elegant, the angular form of the base is softened by the materiality, making it feel like a piece that invites lounging,” the stylist attests.
