- Feature Chateau de la Resle | France
Dutch natives, Johan Bouman and Pieter Franssens are the owners of Château de la Resle, a six-room B&B surrounded by 14 acres of gardens and orchards in France’s wine region of Burgundy. After having searched for a suitable property for over a year, it was love at first sight after unearthing this quintessential French chateau in 2005.
Located in the village of Montigny, near Auxerre, the ivy clad mansion was originally built in the 17th century, but was restored in the 19th century after it was destroyed by a fire. The exterior features traditional oeil-de-boeuf windows in the steep slate gables, picturesque white shutters and formal gardens.
Step inside the building however and you fast-forward a century or two. When Bouman and Franssens converted the property to a boutique hotel they kept a few of the original features such as oak paneled walls, baroque fireplaces and some antiques, but otherwise opted for a contemporary look that has earned them a special place in the Design Hotels portfolio
