Design by Golden was the natural fit behind this striking South Yarra apartment. With a focus on curated objects and an attention to sculptural detail, this talented duo single-handedly created the perfect metropolitan haven for an art-loving couple.

It’s hard to believe that just four years ago co-founders Kylie Dorotic and Alicia McKimm established Golden (formerly We Are Huntly). Now, with more than 60 projects safely stowed under their multidisciplinary belts and a bevy of well-deserved accolades (including being named Emerging Interior Design Practice at the Australian Interior Design Awards last year) Golden has become an almost overnight success story.

Striving for an honest, almost reductive approach to their work, this South Yarra home is no exception.

From the moment you step inside this considered terrace a stone ledge and polished plaster niche welcome you inside. The curved wall draws you into the space,  complementing the asymmetric nature of the apartment and opening up the dining area to create a feeling of space and flow. The full-height custom mirror is a beautiful addition, which only acts to further enhance this sense of openness as it reflects the heritage façade and tree-lined street beyond.

The grounding foundation of warm and natural materials makes for a balanced backdrop that sets the tone for the rest of the home. White-washed timber parquetry flooring provides a soft base, while alternating white and dark grey painted walls create a luxurious contrast against the textures of the polished plaster and creamy veined stone surfaces. Billowy, sheer floor-to-ceiling curtains round off all this sophistication.

At only 82m2 it’s an intimate residence, but one that is bursting with bold, asymmetrical lines and unique objects that build depth, drama and space to celebrate design. Case in point is the clever, built-in living room joinery. Featuring a simple structural white frame, timber shelving and minimal detailing, it provides the perfect place to showcase sculptural objects.

Reading like a curated talent show of epic proportions, each room applauds original global design pieces. From the iconic PP701 Minimal Chair by Hans. J. Wegner, distinctly French Serge Mouille Lamps to the New York-based Apparatus Neo Lantern pieces. Each item piece fills the apartment with its unique personality.

A space that is unexpected and asymmetrically balanced using an installation of beautiful objects, this South Yarra Residence maximises every aspect.

This gallery-like home has a cultivated taste for the bold and the beautiful but is also careful to retain it’s warm and homely feel. A carefully edited ‘less is more’ approach has definitely paid off for Golden. With a near-perfect 10/10 score, it’s a gold medal from us.
