On the first week of February, a design blanket fell over Stockholm. Marked in the calendar of makers and designers globally, the takeover was the zenith of Scandinavian design and innovation. Stockholm Design Week and Stockholm Furniture and Light Fair had the city buzzing with over 200 design-related events – a buzz that we felt here at est.

The Swedes never seem to disappoint, with a design sensitivity marked by an allure for raw materials that we too gravitate to at est. The industrial designs hailing from across the Nordic region are often the most prized products we see in a space and without fail, Stockholm has brought us a few more. This year we are sharing our six highlights that stuck out amid a sea of the best-in-class concepts. Handpicking was a tricky task indeed but rest assured you have all reason to be excited over what’s new from up north in 2018. Design aficionados: prepare to drool.

Spisolini Dining Chair by Andreas Engesvik for Fogia

The Bollo Armchair is an instantly recognisable icon, testament to Norwegian designer Andreas Engesvik’s distinct work. This year the halls of Stockholm were blessed with a Bollo of different proportions – the Spisolini – refining the curvaceous chair for a dining setting. The debut of the Spisolini Dining Chair was met with an exceptionally warm reception as it equally would be in our home, making for a very leisurely soiree.

Hand-oiled String Pocket Timber Shelf by String Furniture

String Furniture have storage pretty much down pat, and our choice from the many aesthetically-pleasing choices at Stockholm is the String Pocket Timber Shelf by String Furniture found at Great Dane Furniture. Launched at Stockholm, the String Pocket struck a chord with us at est for its adaptability and elegant hand-oiled finish. It’s a bookshelf that can fit anywhere with its two panels and three shelves; simplicity and functionality going hand in hand in a smooth timber fashion.

The Jin Chair by Jin Kuramoto for Offecct

Awarded the Best Product at Stockholm for 2018, it was almost a given that the inventive Jin Chair would be invited into our favourites. Designed by Jin Kuramoto for Swedish Manufacturer OFFECCT, the chair won us over with not only its stylistic considerations but its gearing towards sustainable outcomes. After a close study of unconventional materials, Jin Kuramoto crafted the chair from 100% biological flax fibre and solidified by resin, making it both lightweight and highly durable. The Jin Chair is a leading design in all respects.

The Mingle Sofa by Flemming Lassen for Fred International

While the entirely new often grabs our attention, it was a subtle take on the timeless that we appreciated at Stockholm in 2018. The Mingle Sofa was designed by architect Flemming Lassen in 1935 and takes its name from that exact act of conversation. Flemming believed in mingling in the utmost comfort, and cosy comfort it is with the new sheepskin version available at Fred International. We know where we’ll be hoping to curl up by an open fire when winter comes around.

Arkipelago Table KVP10 by Kari Virtanen for Nikari

True to form, the Arkipelago Table by Nikari is an outdoor timber table of exceptional quality. A pioneering manufacturer of sustainable wood products, Nikari’s designs are the result of working with some of the finest Finnish architects. The Archipelago Table is made in one of the oldest machinery workshops in the country and certainly underscores traditional methods of making with a modern edge. We couldn’t look past the Arkipelago Table for nailing the essence of Finnish Design.

Angui Bar Stool by AYTM

Last but certainly not least is the Angui Bar Stool from Danish brand AYTM. Since their inception, AYTM have always celebrated what’s new in Danish Design and the Angui Bar Stool is all reason to. Together, the deep forest green, geometry of steel and velvet upper meld for an elegant bar stool that we’d gladly enjoy a fine drop of wine on. Our only advice: be sure to check out more of AYTM’s Angui collection.
