Trust independent Australian furniture designer Ross Didier to place a fashionable twist on his latest collection. Referencing the Haute Couture silhouettes seen on the runways of long admired fashion houses, Didier’s latest Apparel Collection includes a wingback chair, low back chair and footstool. Seamlessly blending fashion with furniture design, each piece has been artfully shaped using striking sculpted forms, engineered patterns, bespoke seam detailing and is available in a selection of contemporary fabrics to offer the opportunity of crafting a personalised piece.

Melbourne-based Didier is known for intuiting a world where art meets design; his craft often fuses function with engineering, and utilitarianism embraces a sense of luxury. As a small but influential player in the Australian industry, Didier’s collections capture his authentic narrative. Each collection is imbued with his passionate and pioneering pursuit towards designing quality pieces. Speaking exclusively with est, Ross talks us through his brand philosophy, process and the inspiration behind his latest pieces.

Where did you draw inspiration from when designing The Apparel Collection?

Ross Didier: Apparel was inspired by the worlds of haute couture and costume design, where the meticulous creations combine beautiful silhouettes with breathtaking shapes. Each Apparel piece can be custom upholstered in high quality, luxurious fabrics or leathers to celebrate each customer’s unique individuality.

Can you talk a little about the process behind designing these three pieces?

Ross Didier: Apparel took multiple seasons to perfect, and we spent many hours researching costume design and high-fashion construction. I watched numerous fashion parades from early Dior to recent Prada, experimenting with handmade prototypes until the curvaceous forms and classic detailing created a formal and luxurious comfort.

“Apparel invites you to take your place, experience true luxury and become enveloped in well-earned indulgence.

The sculptural curves inform a strong motif throughout Ross Didier’s latest collection.

The low back chair and wingback chair work in complete harmony; their artfully shaped silhouettes make a strong design statement together.

Continually blurring the lines between sculptural aesthetics and designed function, how does The Apparel Collection continue your brand’s philosophy?

Ross Didier: With life drawing classes, the ability to build up the figure with layered shapes is a technique that helped create the foundation for Apparel’s form. I have always believed that furniture is the closest expression of functional sculpture and this design range shows a close relationship to corset figuration.

How does this latest range of seating reflect your timeless approach to design?

Ross Didier: Good design needs to be more than style and requires longevity to withstand the short-term trends. Apparel seating has been designed with a unique, classic aesthetic and perfectly serves the purpose of comfort and support, with a high-quality seating experience.
