Pacific House by Penman Brown

  • Interior design practice Penman Brown redefine a family beachside Bungalow in Sydney’s northern suburbs.

Penman Brown have successfully preserved the spirit of a beach house in a sought after locale through the addition of a lofty glass pavilion.

Capturing the northern light and maximising the existing internal floor-space, the home mimics the coastal tranquillity of its surrounds through a curated spectrum of monochromatic finishes and gentle layering of materials. Designed for a large family, Penman Brown have effortlessly envisioned the client’s desire for a home that harbours intimacy.

The living room features the Living Divani Neowall Sofa, the Little Petra VB1 Chair by Viggo Boesen and the Lato LN8-9 Side Table by Luda Nichetto, both for &tradition and the 637 Utrecht Armchair by Gerrit Thomas Rietveld for Cassina.

The kitchen features a custom island bench in Cote D’Azur by CDK Stone, and the VOLA 590H Kitchen Mixer.

The dining room features the Akari Light Sculpture by Isamu Noguchi and the In Between Chair and In Between Dining Table by Sami Kallio for &tradition.

The pavilion houses multiple areas; the entry, an open kitchen, laundry, study, dining and living area. Undeniably, the home’s stand-out feature is the 5.5 metre elevated volume in the centre of the pavilion space. Designed to take advantage of the home’s enviable forested location, the pavilion structure douses the floor area in spectacular natural light throughout the day.

Engineered European Oak floorboards from Tongue n Groove in Hekke set the tone for the base of the home; the essential foundation for the refined colour palette consistent throughout the abode. Playful hues of terracotta and navy make appearances throughout the living space, contrasting the floor and wall coverings. To warm the space in winter, an Escea DS Series Frameless gas fireplace sits on a custom concrete plinth.

The kitchen plays home to a bold custom marble benchtop by CDK Stone; its gentle curves complementing the bespoke linear cabinetry designed by Penman Brown. Integrated appliances and streamlined joinery subtly frame the space, revealing a cleverly-concealed butler’s pantry and laundry room. Built-in cabinetry is implemented in multiple areas of the home, framing the walls and providing much-needed storage required for a large family.

A spacious, luxurious master ensuite acts as a sanctuary, drawing inspiration from a hammam (a traditional Turkish steam bath). The floating vanity creates a sense of openness, juxtaposed with the privacy obtained by the partially-hidden freestanding bath.

Through the meticulous consideration of furniture and deliberately tactile finishes, Penman Brown have designed an enviable home for a family to grow in.
