Italian Design, Australian Lifestyle | Entertaining Outdoors with Space Furniture

Space Furniture brings the artistry of Italian outdoor living to Australia, where influential brands, Edra, B&B Italia, and Kartell turn alfresco design into a celebration of living outside.

Enjoying life within the great outdoors is a rite of passage for most Australians. With our temperate climate and love for open-air entertaining, our homes have long embraced a seamless flow between inside and out, blurring the boundaries between home and landscape. From poolside terraces to leafy backyards and courtyard gardens, the alfresco space is no longer an afterthought—but an essential extension of our homes.

Guided by this understanding, Australian retailer Space Furniture offers some of the world’s most recognisable brands to the local landscape/ Leading the way in shaping spaces where design, comfort, and connection can coexist; we spotlight three Italian design houses exclusive to Space—Edra, B&B Italia, and Kartell—each redefining outdoor spaces through creative ingenuity, innovative and resilient materials, modern silhouettes, and quintessential Italian elegance.

Making its outdoor furniture debut in 2025, Edra extends its sculptural language beyond the interior with its Every Stone upholstery collection, unveiled at Milan Design Week 2025. Led by Vice President Monica Mazzei, the collection expands on Edra’s legacy of material innovation, drawing inspiration from the natural world. “Nature has inspired us since 1990 with the Flower Collection,” Mazzei reflects. “It is our way of looking at the beauty which is often there before our eyes.”

Infused with the colours and textures of precious stones — from Alpine Green and Nero Marquinia to Carrara White and Royal Yellow—the richly tactile palette reimagines Edra’s iconic forms, including Francesco Binfaré’s On the Rocks, Sherazade, and Standard sofas, for open-air living. Seamlessly merging expressive design with comfort, Edra’s outdoor collection captures the essence of contemporary Italian luxury—inviting a moment of pause, connection, and the simple pleasure of time spent outdoors.

A trailblazer in Italian design, B&B Italia continues to set the benchmark for visionary thinking, craftsmanship, and enduring appeal. Drawing on decades of research and architectural precision, the brand reimagines the outdoors as an extension of the home — spaces that invite social connection and relaxed living.

From its very beginning in the 1960s, B&B Italia has collaborated with some of the world’s most prestigious designers. These partnerships have been central to the brand’s evolution, shaping its approach to design and lifestyle.

Each collaboration brings a unique perspective, resulting in iconic pieces—from Piero Lissoni’s lightweight yet robust Borea collection, to Mario Bellini’s sculptural La Bambola outdoor armchair, Barber Osgerby’s monolithic Tobi-Ishi table, and the curved Erica outdoor sofa and sunbed by Antonio Citterio, which showcase the brand’s mastery of soft geometry and material innovation.

Engineered to withstand the elements without compromising on comfort, B&B Italia’s outdoor collections embrace the brand’s indoor elegance en plein air. The result is furniture that feels architectural yet approachable and perfectly in tune with the relaxed aesthetic of the Australian lifestyle. With a rich history of experimentation and material innovation stretching back to 1949, Kartell has long celebrated the meeting of art and industry. Its outdoor collection carries this ethos into open-air living, offering pieces that are both resilient and sculptural, reflecting the versatility and playful spirit that have defined the brand’s legacy — proving that function can be explored alongside creative intrigue.

Recent introductions to the outdoor range include the HiRay Collection by Ludovica and Roberto Palomba, which explores refined metalwork in clean, linear silhouettes, while the Liberty collaboration brings expressive fabrics, vibrant prints, and tactile finishes to alfresco settings. Meanwhile, iconic designs such as Philippe Starck’s Bubble Club sofa and armchair, and the recognisable Masters Chair, continue to define Kartell’s fresh take on outdoor furniture.
