In reimagining a residence in Melbourne’s CBD, Rob Mills Architecture & Interiors has crafted not one, but two kitchens that seamlessly blend sophisticated design elements with premium appliances.
The vision for the home was to design two distinct kitchens tailored to the homeowners’ culinary passions. One kitchen stands out as an elegant showcase of form and function, while the second, a concealed space designed specifically for Chinese cuisine, integrates powerful ventilation and considered materials to cater to specific culinary needs. Both kitchens include premium appliances from the Sub-Zero and Wolf range, ensuring a seamless fusion of innovation and craftsmanship.
“Each of our kitchens are crafted to reflect the unique lifestyles of our clients,” architect Rob Mills says. “In this case, that meant understanding and designing for the client’s culture and cooking practice. The design of both kitchens had to not only be visually striking but also allow for an easy workflow.”
As part of our Kitchen Closeup series, we explore the primary kitchen – the heart of the project and a true embodiment of the client’s elevated lifestyle.
The primary kitchen combines striking marble, rich oak cabinetry, and sleek Sub-Zero and Wolf appliances, including an integrated Sub-Zero refrigerator and wine refrigerator, and a Wolf oven, steam oven, and induction cooktop. The final touches include Pittella Tura Joinery 02 handles, Poliform Ventura stools in chocolate leather upholstery, and a Camie Lyons sculptural artwork from Scott Livesey Gallery
"The client’s vision for their new kitchen was uncompromising, naturally extending to the choice of appliances. Sub-Zero and Wolf were selected as they consistently deliver on aesthetics and functionality."
- Architect, Rob Mills
The primary kitchen is a study in contrasts, pairing natural stone with rich, dark-timber cabinetry. Its centrepiece; a monolithic marble island bench, features veins of cream and caramel that echo the earthy tones of the oak cabinetry. The combination of these materials, Mills notes, creates a “refined and contemporary space,”.
This rich material contrast is balanced by the integration of sleek Sub-Zero and Wolf appliances. A Sub-Zero refrigerator and wine refrigerator are discreetly housed within the timber framework, while a pair of Wolf ovens introduce a sophisticated touch of stainless steel, imbuing the space with exceptional performance. “The client’s vision for their new kitchen was uncompromising, naturally extending to the choice of appliances,” Mills notes. “Sub-Zero and Wolf were selected as they consistently deliver on aesthetics and functionality. The success of the kitchen hinged on our collaboration with these brands, whose contributions were crucial to achieving the final result.”
Rob Mills Architecture & Interiors have transformed this kitchen into a pinnacle of elevated living, where performance and design converge. As Mills eloquently puts it, “In every residence and every space, we aim to achieve intelligent architecture, healthy design, a commitment to craftsmanship, and a profound connection with nature. This philosophy applies to the kitchen, where functionality must align with aesthetics to meet daily demands.”
