With an eye for balancing minimalist foundations with rich textural materiality, there’s a reason Pamela Makin is a name that comes up time and time again here at Est HQ. In both her interior design work and as the driving force behind design studio and concept store Les Interieurs, Pamela captures depth and character without ever overstepping into cluttered territory. Having caught glimpses of her infamous coastal home and Les Interieurs in the past, today we’re treating you to a peek at both after a recent update to the beach house by Pamela and the debut of a new Les Interieurs spot in Newport Beach.
With its distinct Pacific Ocean views, the Bungan Beach house is where Pamela and her husband live – and after being immersed in the buzz of the city throughout the day, it’s truly a place of restoration. “After living and breathing design and styling each day, I retreat to the beach house to unwind and relax” Pamela says. Working with her favourite colour palette of white with accents of black, the home’s most recent transformation has seen it become a calming minimalist retreat, peppered with design furniture, artwork and indoor greenery (not to mention that tree trunk by Makin’s husband, artist Reginald Byrne) to build a distinct character.
The blending of contemporary with primitive, rough with the smooth and old with the new continues in the new Les Interieurs store in Newport Beach, where again a soft white backdrop acts as a serene canvas to the myriad of textures, forms and materials showcased in the studio’s collection. While in the wrong hands tribal artefacts and wicker details might feel clunky and forced, they are showcased masterfully in the Les Interieurs curation, demonstrating the beauty in finding and uniting styles and materials from all over the world. In achieving a balance of so many elements and individual pieces, Pamela’s spaces show their unique soul – and have us seriously considering a similar interior transformation of our own.
