An Art Deco aesthetic, adopted from the building’s origins, underpins each guest room and draws on rich reds, amber and ochre tones.
Sydney’s latest boutique accommodation, Hotel Morris, has been carefully restored by Tom Mark Henry to pay homage to the opulent legacy of the Italian Renaissance building that it occupies.
European refinement and an authentically Australian essence underpin the completely refurbished interiors of Hotel Morris by award-winning interior design studio Tom Mark Henry.
Designed as a showcase of local artistry and a celebration of the establishment’s historical origins, Tom Mark Henry has paid meticulous attention to preserving the Italian Renaissance building, which once proudly held the distinction of being Australia’s tallest hotel for 34 years.
The newly renovated guest suites and opulent Bar Morris on the ground floor, offer guests the chance to experience the perfect balance between personality and tranquillity, tucked away in the heart of Sydney.
Custom-designed wallpaper offers a nod to the building’s opulent past.
Guided by their client’s stories, co-founders Cushla McFadden and Jade Nottage of Tom Mark Henry are an Australian award-winning interior design studio who aim to create ‘influential spaces for Australia’s design enthusiasts’.
Exploring the concept of a journey from dark to light, past to the present, alongside the influence of the Italian to the Australian, Hotel Morris celebrates the rich history of the building designed by architect Virgil Dante Cizzio in 1929.
Stepping off the busy street and into Bar Morris offers an immersive experience that references the Italian Palazzo and Art Deco aesthetics of the guest suites above, while embracing the opportunity for unexpected moments.
A dramatic and seductive space, Tom Mark Henry applied a layered feel by using natural stones, bold reds and earthy pinks, brass detailing, fringing, handmade tiles, Venetian plaster, and Dutch parquetry floors with plenty of deeply-veined marbles to craft a rich, warm and welcoming interior.
Bar Morris on the ground floor embraces moments of maximalism through rich colours, marble, and dark timber. Custom cast hand artwork by local artist Bryce Heyworth.
The guest rooms at Hotel Morris are crafted to balance personality with serenity, gradually transitioning from the grounding darkness of the lobby and Bar Morris on the ground floor to an emerging lightness.
Opulent gold hues are paired with dark timber accents, striking stone and vibrant fabrics and are complemented by classic design touches and timeless furniture and lighting selections. Continuing the design narrative, the hotel corridors echo the maximalist aesthetic of the ground floor and are interspersed with lighter elements to guide guests into their room. Custom-designed wallpaper, distinct datum lines, and contrasting carpet designs all exemplify the sophistication of the rooms while capturing the dramatic ambience of the ground floor.
