Zoe Feldman threads her client’s adventurous spirit into their new home as they relocate from Brooklyn to Washington, D.C.

When the owners relocated from Brooklyn to Washington, D.C., with their two young children, they asked Zoe Feldman to inject ‘their worldly, adventurous design sensibilities’ as she recounts, into their newly constructed home.

Concealing any aspect of its ‘newness’, Feldman has worked tension into the home, where a world of textures, patterns and shapes takes charge. Vintage pieces, notably from the mid-century modern period, are featured alongside new, shaping and embodying the sentiment that the home has been lived in and collected over time. Living spaces are dressed in suede, leather, metals, chandeliers and travertine, grounded by pieces like the checkered abaca rug. “The homeowners are big travellers, so they wanted a space that reflected their adventurous personalities and was still amenable to their young children. There is a global but modern sensibility to the spaces,” Feldman explains.

The kitchen features a classic Lacanche oven, playing into the vibrant blue seen throughout the home.

Materials in the kitchen denote an aged character to the home: quartzite paired with traditional cabinetry featured in black, walnut and dusty teal, further emphasised by the hand-ribbed detail along the edge of the benchtop in the kitchen and butler’s pantry. “Each line was hand-scored by our fabricators, giving it that less-than-perfect look,” Feldman says. The spirited play of patterns and colours is seen in the Moroccan tiles laid vertically and herringbone, while the butler’s pantry is washed in an electric blue.

The butler’s pantry is dressed in Yves Klein blue, Mystic Grey quartzite and faucet from the Henry collection at Waterworks.

Giraffe chairs by Juliana Vasconcellos are tucked under the custom dining table by Nikolai Lafuge and paired with a vintage pendant.

“Materiality was one of the main ways we spoke to the homeowner’s adventurous personalities,” Feldman reflects. “We wanted to create a fun and eclectic space but still thoughtful and refined. The homeowners were open to experimenting with bold colours and patterns, so we leaned into this with the Yves Klein blue butler pantry, the multicolour dining chairs, and wallpaper.”

The character continues to be woven throughout the private living spaces, through vibrant wallpaper, timber panelling, and textured-coloured paint. Rouge Moroccan subway tiles, married with limestone mosaic floor tiling, enrich the ensuite with a deep warmth. Traditional brass plumbing and trim fixtures accentuate warmth.

The living room features the Sonora coffee table by Casamidy, the Camarat sofa by Frederic Pellenq, the vintage travertine pedestal by Broyt and Zumberi Abaca rug by Patterson Flynn.

The &Tradition Flowerpot pendant lights are accent pieces in the stairway.
