Architect Ivana Tuneu of Lizarriturry Tuneu Architects and interior designer Aude May of Bloomint Design have seamlessly revitalised a once dark and dated villa in Costa Brava, Spain.

Situated in the charming village of Calella de Palafrugell, on the coast of Spain, Villa Cap Roig embodies the allure of contemporary Mediterranean villas. Owned by a Belgian couple based in Switzerland, the home realised their long-term dream of acquiring an old villa in Costa Brava, the site of their very first meeting. With the help of Lizarriturry Tuneu Architects and Bloomint Design, the villa has become the perfect Spanish getaway for the couple and their three children.

Bloomint Design treat each project as an opportunity to give a house a second chance. Taking into consideration the environment and history of Costa Brava, they craft spaces that are aligned with the Mediterranean traditions of simplicity and authenticity. “We look for stories, colours and, above all, a feeling of belonging,” Aude explains.

Ivana describes the villa as “the ideal vacation home”, boasting an open design, welcoming communal spaces, natural materials and a soothing colour palette. An atmosphere of relaxation and refinement permeates through the spaces, heightened by panoramic views of the home’s natural surroundings. “From the moment you step inside, there is an immediate ‘wow’ effect evoked through the breathtaking views of the landscape, the serene design elements and the magnificent volumes,” Ivana affirms.

Large bay windows connect the interiors to the landscape and bring in an abundance of natural light.

The material palette exudes warmth and comfort, weaving together raw timbers, microcement and soft, natural fabrics. “These choices reflect a desire to harmonise aesthetics with the values of sustainability and a connection to nature,” Aude says. Light plays a crucial role in bringing this selection of textures and colours to life, with large bay windows and strategically placed skylights illuminating the once-dark corners of the house.

Villa Cap Roig stands as a testament to the transformative power of honouring a building’s past and natural context. Lizarriturry Tuneu Architects and Bloomint Design have not only revived the villa but crafted an extraordinary retreat where history, environment and contemporary design converge harmoniously.

Smooth finishes and rounded edges bring a soft, organic feel to the spaces.
