Home Tour | Spanish Mission-Style Home by Lande Architects

Royal Oak Floors Toasted Oak

Warm and tactile timber flooring from Royal Oak Floors in Toasted Oak are featured throughout the home.

Designed for Lande Architects co-founder Ellie Spinks’ parents, Spanish Mission House is a project of minimal intervention and maximum impact.

Located in Melbourne’s leafy inner-city suburb of Prahran, the home is designed to cater for the couple’s want for a smaller space, transitioning from their large family home. Non-negotiables included a single-floor living, personality and an abundance of space for the grandchildren to run wild.

“Working with the client, we were able to draw on a lifetime of histories, experiences and anecdotes to inject into the project,” Spinks reflects. “The interiors speak to a maturity and confidence akin to a couple of their vintage,” she adds.

The client’s vibrant art collection and eclectic furniture pieces inspired the interiors. The team worked to incorporate colour, texture and careful placement of personal objects to help craft each space with a “unique dialect of a common language.” A timeless mix of calming green hues, bold blushes, and moody corks pay homage to the home’s previous life.

“By doing no more, but no less than what was required, we were able to celebrate the home’s features and build upon them to create an eclectic interior which speaks to a collection of art, furniture and things that have evolved over time,” Spinks says.

The design team made initial moves to prioritise northern aspects of living spaces, provide the front with a ‘sense of arrival’, and make the kitchen much more functional overall. Featuring traditional design elements, such as a solid island bench in warm blackbutt timber with more modern salmon-toned joinery, the eat-in kitchen is “now a space for the clients to come together, rather than live on top of each other,” Spinks says. “Ian can eat breakfast and read the paper while Sandy potters in the kitchen,” she smiles.

Designed to feel like a cocoon, the study also provides a view out to the large yard area, from deep within the house. The main bedroom was reconfigured so that the bed would sit in the centre of the room, surrounded by soft green walls; the green zellige tiles in the bathroom also correspond with the bedroom’s colour.

“One element in the house that the clients were unsure about during the design process, funnily has become their favourite space in the house,” Ellie shares. “The shower, or day spa as they call it, is enclosed in a room of its own, with a framed glazed door that looks out the traditional window to the southern garden,” she adds.

A testament to the studio philosophy centred around functional, personalised and evocative spaces, Spanish Mission House aims to showcase how a sustainable approach to design through retention and conservation can improve liveability.

“It has been very special to see someone in our life be so transformed by the space we have created,” Spinks says. “Seeing them discover and enjoy the little elements that we created has been heartwarming,” she adds.
