Proclamation House by State of Kin is designed as a light-filled oasis, which can easily switch into entertainment mode.

From the street in Western Australia’s Subiaco, Proclamation House appears like a single storey. Yet once inside, the olive-toned render and confident curves that wrap the exterior blend into soaring, double-height interiors, designed by State of Kin.

This family residence, while clearly modern in its incarnation, draws on the history of the suburb. “We reinterpreted the local vernacular in the design, exaggerating some of the features and proportions to create a contemporary yet sensitive response to the context,” State of Kin designer Alessandra French says.

Moving from the outside to the inside, the earthy finish transitions throughout the interior. “The singular use of olive-toned render unifies the exterior and interior, creating a feeling of immersion and obscuring boundaries,” French explains on the materiality.

Providing a unique tone and finish, the custom hemp plaster was achieved in an iterative manner. French says this resulted from experimentation with a range of ratios and combinations, testing traditional plaster materials with hemp fibres to get it just right.

Key to its development was not only achieving the “desired earthy, elemental aesthetic” but also to ensure adequate functional properties. In this respect, rigorous testing for heat and water was done. To achieve such an experimental veil of materiality, State of Kin’s clients were unsurprisingly open and trusting. “From our first meeting with Alex and Yackeen, it was clear we were embarking on a truly unique project. Their trust in us and the design process was unwavering, and their enthusiasm to be part of the journey was inspiring,” French says.

An important part of the brief was the zoning and spatial planning. This home needed to accommodate dual functions – be a calm and peaceful abode for relaxation and reading, and equally be capable of hosting parties and entertaining friends.

State of Kin’s response is flexible in layout with multifunctional spaces. There is no wasted space, rather, consideration has been given to how areas can adapt and be used in a multitude of ways. The outdoor area decked out with the Giro Outdoor range by Kettal, offers quiet spaces to read or reflect, and can easily hold larger groups of guests. Inside, the mezzanine doubles as a study and a guest suite. French confirms it’s a home that “seamlessly shifts between moments of solitude and connection”.

The materiality offers a singular, monolithic feel, which creates an arresting spatial quality. Coupled with this are voluminous scales, that make the interior appear with a cave-like solitude. Light is drawn inside through architectural features such as the pitched roof. Internally this translates as a series of light wells, “affording a dramatic expansion of space,” French says, adding, “stepping inside reveals a luminous atrium with soaring vaulted ceilings.”

Central to the home’s interior is the kitchen. Positioned beneath the mezzanine with openness all around, it manages to cement the living space. A large, sculptural kitchen bench, also rendered in the custom hemp plaster, appears like an altar, inviting the rituals of daily life. The kitchen is brought to life with a pair of Cassina Cab stools, in a rich red wine leather, and an iconic Cassina Red and Blue armchair.

To achieve a home of such inspired proportions and experimentation was only possible with homeowners that are open to going down such a path. A fact that French acknowledges with gratitude, “[Our clients] gave us creative freedom to bring their vision to life, fully trusting our expertise.”
