A family weekend retreat set over two floors in Ostend, Belgium creates a transcendent counterbalance to frenetic city life, with ambient tones and expansive sea views.
Belgian interior design studio TJIP, which has a dedicated approach to light and texture, began collaborating with their client during the plan development stage for a penthouse apartment located on Belgium’s Flemish North Sea.
This created an opportunity to shape an ideal floorplan for the project and, ultimately, maximise views of Ostend and the 180-degree views of the ocean while capturing the feeling of freedom their client was seeking when escaping Brussels city life.
The studio began the design process early on in the architectural stage to create a simple, smart floor plan with a clear separation between the residence’s two floors. The lower of the two floors is the ‘family and friends’ zone, while the floor above comprises office space and private quarters.
TJIP’s dedicated approach to light and texture is seen in the open-plan living and kitchen space.
The Carl Hansen & Son CH24 Wishbone chairs and Viabizzuno Royal Sospensione pendant light in the dining area.
Contrasting dark wood veneer is used in considered places to strengthen the overall design.
The living area features the Cassina 637 Utretcht armchair and Miniforms Soda side table.
The two floors are connected by a hidden staircase concealed behind a cupboard door, forming a distinct separation between the residence’s private and public areas while also intensifying the impact of the loft’s high ceilings and sea views.
With a focus on the experiential atmosphere of the residence, materials and colours form a natural extension of both Ostend and the North Sea. Warm natural materials are applied throughout with a contrasting dark wood veneer used in considered places to strengthen the overall design.
