Home Tour | Malvern Home by Sanders & King

Located in Melbourne’s Malvern, this solid brick 1930s Maisonette has been reimagined into a light-filled and spacious family home that thoughtfully blends traditional and contemporary design.

Overcoming the challenges of the original confined layout, Melbourne-based design studio Sanders & King transformed the home into one harmonious and cohesive open area that invites a fluid relationship between connecting spaces.

It was integral to the brief to improve and update the flow of the separate, disjointed rooms without compromising the home’s charm, achieved by integrating the home’s traditional design details into the renovation – cornices, ceiling roses and archways – which were previously stripped. The large steel windows, which were painted black in keeping with the home’s contemporary finishes, were repurposed from the original home, wrapping the living spaces to welcome light and views of the lush gardens.  Skylights were also strategically placed through the south-facing spaces to ensure that every space in the home is naturally lit.

The home’s transformation reflects a “timeless yet dynamic re-imagination of the family home,” Sanders & King co-founder and interior designer Elissa King says. “It’s a space able to accommodate our client’s needs and wants, both now and in the future, and to withstand the wear and tear of family life,” she adds, explicitly seen through the use of durable materials.

“The material palette reflects an inherent quality, timeless aesthetic and tranquil appeal,” Elissa says.“Timber, marble, steel, custom-encaustic cement tile, handmade Moroccan tiles and tonal paint harmoniously combine warmth and texture.”

Wood Coat Australia timber flooring is featured throughout the home.

Sanders & King weren’t afraid to inject bold pops of colour against the soft contemporary backdrop. Tonal blues are an accent throughout the home, as seen in the vibrant blue Cappellini Lud’O 4-Spoke Base lounge chair and deep, moody navy hues in the entry room and staircase.

Sanders & King’s tactful interior intervention and respect for heritage have ensured this Melbourne family home will remain enduring and relevant for years to come.

The kitchen was designed closely with the homeowners and is defined by white cabinetry and marble benchtops with a focal powder blue Lacanche Sully Classic oven. At the same time, the curved kitchen island was inspired by the soft, arched curves of traditional 1930s architecture.

In the ensuite, Sanders & King utilised the existing arch and transformed it into a marble-clad entrance into the open shower, while circular skylights continue the curved motif.
