Home Tour | Elsternwick Residences by ADDARC

The kitchen features a sleek island bench crafted from light-grey quartzite, paired with 2-pac cabinetry and terrazzo floors in the same tone. The space also features a Miele dishwasher and oven, and Gaggenau cooktops, supplied by E+S Trading, as well as Liebherr refrigerators.

ADDARC have designed two unified family homes marked by simplicity, flow and lightness.

The leafy streets of Elsternwick, in Melbourne’s south-east, are lined with a mix of both old and new residential architecture. Local architecture studio ADDARC have delved into the latter, taking a considered approach to two new unified family homes.

From the street, the homes present as a singular building clad in variegated grey bricks and dark-stained-timber operable screens. This restrained palette, bringing out the verdant hues of the surrounding trees, extends into the interior of the homes in the form of custom joinery and features walls, consolidating inside and out.

Cassina 412 Cab Chair

A second dining space features Cassina Cab chairs in black leather.

Each home comprises a flexible bedroom/study on the ground level together with the entry, separate sitting room and family living zones, all of which open up to a north-facing rear backyard. The family living zones take full advantage of the breadth of the site, becoming light-filled and spacious areas to gather. Reeded-glass doors provide subtle privacy and separation while allowing soft light to permeate deep into the floorplan – a play of light further enhanced upstairs with the introduction of skylights. The upper level comprises three bedrooms, a master bedroom and ensuite, laundry, drying room and study nook, as well as an inset courtyard.

ADDARC treated the spaces as “muted backdrops for punctuations of colour and soft furnishings”. In the kitchen, for instance, the oversized light-grey quartzite benchtops and terrazzo floors contrast with the adjacent cherry-red dining table and chairs. In the private spaces, light-wood laminate is paired with sheer-linen curtains, leather pulls and glass objects, crafting simple yet detailed spaces to unwind.

The restrained exterior palette extends into the interiors in the form of custom joinery and feature walls. Reeded-glass doors provide subtle privacy and separation.

In the bathrooms, leather pulls serve as an elegant touch.
