Bungalow Blonde by Sydney-based architecture studio Litera Trotta prioritises an indoor-outdoor connection to create an inviting family home.
Located in Sydney’s eastern suburbs, Bungalow Blonde’s long-time owners wanted to open up the home’s spaces, “maintaining its character but reinventing its functionality,” Litera Trotta co-founder Bronwyn Litera says. Through their design intervention, including a reimagining of the home’s confined layout and a double-storey extension, Litera Trotta has met the client’s desire for a light-filled family abode.
The dining space features the Lost Profile Covenant pendant.
The home’s original layout was single-level, with a “structurally questionable” first-floor addition of a bedroom and balcony. “The layout of the home was flawed, and the centre dark and unused,” Bronwyn reveals. It was integral to the brief that the home exude a fresh, airy atmosphere by efficiently using the space available. This resulted in the client’s desire to “open the house and introduce light wherever possible,” achieved by adding an upper storey and emphasising a connection to the rear garden.
Reflecting the importance of indoor-outdoor connection that was lacking in the original structure, the living areas were lowered to create split levels. The result is high ceilings and an abundance of natural light, letting the communal area effortlessly unfold onto the rear garden.
Timber-framed windows along the northern façade of the open-plan living area also welcome light while maintaining privacy. Upstairs, the primary bedroom features oversized timber sliding doors to further bring the outside in.

Litera Trotta approached the interiors with their client’s playful attitude in mind. Playing with form and function, the curved staircase features a sloping ceiling and half-moon skylight that drenches the space in natural light. The curved battened glass floor opens up the lower level while playing to the sculptural motif throughout the home.
“The bungalow has been truly transformed from it’s simple and basic bones, into an incredibly warm and lofty family home,” affirms Litera Trotta co-founder Chris Trotta. “Its unassuming front is a veil for the wonders within – bright, playful spaces, soft and sinuous curves, doused in natural light; it implores its guests to expect the unexpected”.
