A heritage townhouse in Belgravia, London has been timelessly restored to exhibit the owner’s private collection of artworks.

Positioned in one of London’s most exclusive neighbourhoods, a six-storey Georgian House stands elegantly in Belgravia, hemming around the local garden square with its connecting mews. The stately residence is part of the Grosvenor Estate, home to some of London’s most affluent societies and embassies.

The kitchen is served with luminous light from windows facing the private courtyard.

Earthy tones have been expressed through the selection of solid and natural materials such as oak, stone and travertine in the kitchen. Resident Kashmir barstools are tucked under the kitchen island.

Historically, The heritage townhouse underwent a series of micro alterations and suffered from outdated interiors and services. Pringle Richards Sharratt Architects were commissioned by the clients to carry out extensive works to restore the property, which included the demolition and rebuilding of the mews. The mews was redesigned to grant a view into the private court, where it now surrenders to natural light and accommodates new facilities, including a kitchen, media room, and gym.

In collaboration with the architects, State of Craft developed and articulated the creative vision of the floor plans, interiors, fit-outs, lighting, furniture selections, as well as the art curation with the help of Richeldis Fine Arts. Their approach to the project was based on the philosophy of Gesamtkunstwerk, where the designers worked with some of the country’s finest artisans to craft bespoke furniture pieces, joinery, and objects to execute their vision of timelessness and exceptional quality.

Drawing inspiration from the verdant neighbouring garden squares that classically depict the concept of ‘rus in urbe’, the tall windows allow a quiet serenity to permeate the home. This, in turn, is reflected in the designers’ materiality, textures, and colour tone selections. “There is a sense of tranquillity and stillness throughout the home, with soft, earthy tones and the generous use of solid, natural material that appeals to all senses – a complete vision of contemporary living within an urban heritage setting,” State of Craft director Daniel Goldberg says.

The home’s reticent aesthetics are gently interwoven, forming a muted backdrop for the discerning owner’s private collections. British modernism and contemporary art, as well as European antiquities, are dotted throughout. Prominent works by Richard Serra, Ben Nicholson, Joaquim Chancho, Lawrence Calver, Terri Brooks, Alexi Tsioris, and Gerry Judah form part of the esteemed curation.

Throughout the architecture and interiors is a fluid conversation between the classical and contemporary which plays out in the unique collection of artworks and objects that have been carefully arranged,” Daniel says. “There is a clear emphasis on monochrome abstract minimalism and a celebration of materiality, a sensitivity for the processes and histories through which unique objects come into being.”

Belgravia Townhouse now stands proudly not only with its historic charm but also with a restored sensibility that has allowed it to transition into a contemporary home.
