We spotlight the winning residential projects from this year’s Australian Interior Design Awards.
In its 21st year, the 2024 AIDA Awards program saw the largest number of shortlisted projects, totalling 222 across the categories of residential, retail, hospitality, public, workplace and installation design.
The Northcote House by LLDS took out the foremost accolade, the Premier Award, for its “exciting collision of technology, sculpture, and innovative material use” and “unfamiliar yet captivating interior spaces”, as expressed by the jury. The Melbourne architecture studio’s approach to sustainability, where all components of the home were manufactured within five kilometres of the site, also contributed to it receiving the Best of State Award for Residential Design (Victoria) and the Award for Residential Design – a joint recipient with Sydney design practice Pattern Studio’s Daddy Cool. The jury was impressed by how Pattern Studio “worked a traditional terrace very hard through their exploration of minimalism in a playful yet sophisticated manner,” leading Daddy Cool to also take out the Best of State Award for Residential Design (New South Wales).
Commendations for the Residential Design Award included Melbourne architecture studio Kennedy Nolan Architects for both their Fairlie Apartment and their collaboration with Finding Infinity for Wilam Ngarrang Retrofit, Melbourne architects Prior Barraclough for Union Street House, Sydney design studio Tsai Design for Kirribilli Downsize Apartment and Sydney interior design practice YSG Studio for Mo Jacobsen. Kennedy Nolan Architects were also recognised with the Sustainability Advancement award for Wilam Ngarrang Retrofit.

Interior designer Amelda Wilde accepted the Award for Residential Decoration for her own home, the Von Leach Residence. The jurors praised Amelda for her home’s “real sense of expression, inspired by its occupants and their personal values, which made the project stand out amongst the other entries”. The jury also attributed the project’s success to the sustainability of vintage furnishings, recycled steel pieces, and reliance on local manufacturing. Commendations for this category included YSG Studio for their Checkmate and Mo Jacobsen projects and JC HQ for Petite Retreat.
Other State Award winners for the residential category included multi-disciplinary practice SJB Interiors for their Gold Coast Apartment (Queensland), interior design studio Enoki for Stirling Residence (South Australia) and architecture firm State of Kin for Proclamation House.

"There's a freshness that characterises [this year], regardless of how long they have been in practice. It just goes to prove that as an industry, we are showing no signs of fatigue, and our capacity for excellence and innovation has only been strengthened.”
