Five Architects and Designers Share Their Most Memorable Projects

Five architects and designers from Australia and abroad share their most memorable projects to date, reflecting on the joys of their lifelong work.

Mim Fanning

Interior Designer, Mim Design

Melbourne, Australia

There are many memorable projects with a lot of memorable people. But one of the most memorable projects to date is our project ‘Horizon’ in Flinders, Victoria, on the cover of my book ‘Works’. It’s one of our most current projects, and I’ve had so much fun with the client and the builder, with whom I am collaborating with on further projects. We were able to push the envelope in detailing. Every sub-contractor – from the stonemason to the joiner – on that project wanted to create something unique. It opened the door for them to work on more projects with us and think of details differently. To cap it all off, it was an incredible clifftop site overlooking the ocean. You don’t always get one of those! That was an interiors job, we also have a number of architectural projects with amazing locations.

Every project is memorable for its own reasons, and important to different people in the studio who have worked on it. The Microsoft Technology Centre we designed was a special project, not only as it’s one of our biggest clients to date, but it was a real team effort. There was a core team of six designers who worked on this project, however just about everyone pitched in to help at one point or another.

Interior Designer

Sydney, Australia

The boutique hotel Raes on Wategos in Byron Bay. When they engaged me to do the job, I spent a week there, with a night in each different room, to experience the place and understand what worked and what didn’t. I was with my husband, Patrick, and our son, Arthur, who was only six weeks old. Months later, I returned with my son and mum, who’d come to help me, and we spent a week installing all the new pieces. Again, we stayed in a different room each night on what was literally a building site. I’ll never forget it! Raes was a beautiful project to create, and we all still feel like we’re part of the family whenever we visit.

The Aspen project, for which Zone 4 Architects were responsible for the architecture, holds a special place for me. I admire how seamlessly the natural environment is integrated into the design. The fusion between inside and outside is striking, even in the bathroom, where the connection to the mountains creates a serene and relaxing atmosphere, forming a space to truly unwind.

Emma Templeton

Architect, Templeton Architecture

Melbourne, Australia

Given the importance I place on the home, renovating our family home was an important and personal chapter.  A heritage-listed home with many challenges and compromises, the process provided me with a wonderful opportunity to develop deeper empathy and sensitivity towards our clients during their journeys.  The result now houses the people I love the most; it frames our lives and allows us to feel the warmth of family and the sanctuary of home, as well as have the confidence to be ourselves.
