With a modern twist, Doherty Design Studio brings back the majesty and grandeur of the 20’s with this elegant Elwood abode.

A name such as Dickens Manor couldn’t be more fitting for a period home with all the trimmings of its time. Architecturally, its Art Deco spirit is felt throughout bringing timelessness and originality that can only be achieved by the real thing. Lead light windows and doors, decorative ceiling details as well as the exterior of the home all pay tribute to the era of its birth.

Like all homes of a certain period, working alongside its charms and idiosyncrasies can prove to be a challenge yet Doherty Design Studio avoided these frustrations by achieving a ‘pared back yet glamorous feel’ which proved to be the key perspective in succeeding this balancing act. It was all about honouring the art deco roots but providing a contemporary twist.

An excess of moody, dark toned timbers was replaced by a Mediterranean palette which allowed light to enter and illuminate the array of stunning décor carefully selected by Doherty Design Studio. The Great Gatsby provided the lead in décor inspiration and this is primarily seen in the second living and entrance areas. The brass and opaque glass chandelier which takes precedence at the entrance, greets all with theatrical glamour, a perfect nod to the Gatsby aesthetic as mentioned before.

Custom fitted and designed carpentry ( the design is a direct copy of the lead light windows ) which lines the stairwell adds further emphasis to its classic, theatre vibe. A bottle green velvet sofa and reflective gold cabinetry in the second living area pays heed to the powers of gold to instil a classic, old world sensibility. Another globe pendant light makes an appearance here, albeit a less whimsical rendition than its grander cousin in the entryway.

The homes contemporary balance is established in the kitchen, bedrooms and bathroom areas. Whereas the second living and entry way is Gatsby inspired, these rooms are bright, personable and truly modern, taking us on a trip forward in time. The herringbone tiled floor and marble splash back and bench sits centre stage in the kitchen with minimalistic surroundings providing a muted backdrop for its intricacies to shine.

Embellishments are scarce around these quarters with a resounding serenity that is well achieved by the clean lines and quiet colour ways. A fully upholstered bed head and copper detailing in the wardrobe and ensuite adds an extra layer of comfort and personality appropriate for private dwelling areas. A perfect balancing act well achieved by Doherty Design Studio, this Elwood residence is a stellar example that working with and not against is the key to a remarkable renovation.
