British architect David Chipperfield was born in London in 1953 and studied at Kingston School of Art and the Architectural Association. After working with Norman Foster and Richard Rogers, he established David Chipperfield Architects in the mid-1980s; the practice now has offices in London, Berlin, Milan, Shanghai and Santiago de Compostela.
Chipperfield is renowned for calm, rigorous buildings with a deep respect for history and context. His restoration of Berlin’s Neues Museum, completed in 2009, is regarded as a landmark of conservation, joined by the James-Simon-Galerie in Berlin, Turner Contemporary in Margate and the Procuratie Vecchie in Venice. His design work shares that restraint: the Moka espresso maker for Alessi, a bookshelf for Riva 1920 and lighting with Viabizzuno, including the Royal and dca ranges.
Knighted in 2010, Chipperfield received the Pritzker Architecture Prize in 2023. His legacy is an architecture of quiet permanence, and a commitment to social and environmental responsibility.
