Design Destination | The Bower Byron Bay

Located a short walk from Byron Bay’s township and nestled behind the white sands of Tallows Beach, The Bower Byron Bay channels the town’s creative spirit through a lens of understated luxury. Once a classic 1970s Australian motel, the property has been reimagined as a boutique retreat where New York sophistication meets coastal ease.

Byron Bay is defined by its seamless convergence of natural beauty and design innovation, where a relaxed coastal sensibility meets an ever-evolving architectural landscape. This vision is brought to life at The Bower by a team of local designers, architects and builders, led by one of its original owners— renowned Byron Bay designer Taliah Lowry.

Lowry, together with a team of creatives including interior designer Kate Sacks, architect John Burgess, and stylist Kimberley Wiedermann, has ushered in a new chapter for the hotel. Comprising several accommodation options to suit different guests, The Bower Studio suites offer a peaceful retreat, complete with four-poster king beds and stone bathtubs, while The Bower House and Cottage cater to families and groups with expansive indoor-outdoor living and private gardens. The Cottage also features a cedar mineral hot tub, nestled within the lush, tropical garden.

The interiors are imbued with tactility—from billowing linen and aged metals to artisanal finishes—chosen to patina gracefully and reflect the surrounding landscape. While no two rooms are exactly alike, they share a design language rooted in texture, restraint and durability. “The Bower Hotel embodies laid-back luxury, seamlessly fitting into Byron Bay’s relaxed yet refined atmosphere,” Wiedermann says. “Building on The Bower’s signature monochromatic aesthetic, I introduced earthy textures and tones, layering oversized furniture, artisan-crafted objects and bespoke pieces to create a sensory experience that feels both minimal and effortless.”

Wellness is integral to the guest experience, evident in the hotel’s circular magnesium pool and dedicated day spa. Nestled within the gardens, The Bower Spa welcomes in-house guests for immersive treatments using locally made, sustainably crafted Mukti Organics. Founded in the Northern Rivers, Mukti reflects a commitment to clean beauty and botanical science—aligning with The Bower’s ethos of considered luxury.

A short walk from the hotel, Pixie—a vibrant Mediterranean restaurant designed by Flack Studio—is a local favourite. With its playfully refined interiors of bold curves, coral hues and polished timber, Pixie captures Byron’s creative spirit and perfectly complements The Bower’s design-led approach.

The Bower continues to evolve under the stewardship of its original creative collaborators, staying true to its founding spirit while embracing thoughtful refinement. Every element—from the material palette to the landscape design—contributes to a sense of calm, comfort, and quiet elegance. “The enthusiasm and dedication of the owners, staff, and the entire construction, design and styling teams have infused The Bower with a unique accommodation experience that harnesses the soulful, positive and creative energy of Byron Bay,” Sacks says.
