Cloud House by Akin Atelier

  • Making the shortlist for the 2019 AIDA Residential Design category, the Cloud House by Akin Atelier has forged an award-worthy reputation for maximising light at every opportunity.

Renowned Sydney designer Kelvin Ho founded his architecture and interior design studio Akin Creative in 2005. Over the past 14 years he has taken the studio from strength to strength with a portfolio of Sydney’s most recognisable spaces – not to mention global projects. Just last year the decision was made to relaunch Akin Creative to Akin Atelier – a cue that led us to gladly featuring the dynamic studio’s more recent accomplishments.

That fresh design goodness is the Cloud House, a part of the recently announced AIDA shortlist. Located in Bondi Beach, the Cloud House eschews the Sydney-esque art of living well that the area promotes, through flexibility for the family to evolve and a fluid relationship with the outdoors.

The Cloud House has a long and slender footprint, with a chic white render and timber exterior, alluding to its Bondi Beach locale. It was designed as two structures interconnected by the internal courtyard at ground level and the open walkway on the second storey. The ground level spans the shared spaces, while the bedrooms all sit on the upper level. With its street frontage orientated towards the north-east, the driving concept of the home was to draw in light wherever possible, to interact with the various white surfaces of the home, like facets of a cloud.

What’s perhaps most striking about the Cloud House is how the open plan living space exposes the internal courtyard, opening towards the east to benefit from the morning sun. Allowing the northern sun to flood the double-height living area, making a seamless transition from indoors to outdoors, achieved through quality outdoor paving and timber flooring underfoot. Polished, sculptural joinery and Carrara marble that lines the entire kitchen wall and furnishing choices are integral to this resort-like calm. Key design objects include the Thonet dining chairs in a natural finish, High Chair K65 by Alvar Aalto from Artek and the Spence and Lyda Bamboo M1 Pendant in Natural by Illuminate. Softening the space is a Jardan sofa and Armadillo rug and a special appearance from Henry Wilson with the Aluminium Surface Sconce.

By no means do the bathrooms or bedrooms miss out on their dose of natural light. With skylights above the bath and shower and a generous window by the tub, you’re also getting a lovely view of the backyard foliage. But if you want even more foliage while you bathe – Akin Atelier have got that sorted with an outdoor shower. Brodware’s City Stik Tapware was the range chosen for both the bathroom and kitchen fixtures.

The Cloud House delivers on every level; from its appreciation of the Bondi Beach climate, to how Akin Atelier have created a comfortable, inviting and happy place to grow up. We recommend you bold and underline this AIDA nominee.
