Chy House by LOFT Design Studio is located on Lake Kierski in a small town near Poznan, Poland. Led by architect Patryk Matyja and creative director Konrad Opala, the architecture and interior design practice drew inspiration from the history of modernist architecture to inform the home’s design.

Working with a site that exists in such a picturesque location, the design team sought opportunities to highlight moments of connection between the interior and its perspective on the lake beyond, enabling an “intimate relationship” between the home and its natural surroundings. “The positioning of the house and the arrangement of windows create a stage for nature,” Matyja says. “This allows the residents to be quiet observers of the extraordinary changes in the environment typical of this geographic region,” he adds.

Strengthening the relationship between inside and out is the home’s façade, which features a hand-laid sandstone echoed throughout the interior alongside other natural materials, including timber and stone. “Crema Veneziana marble and walnut timber act as an aesthetic bond throughout the interiors,” Opala continues. “Stone on the floor provides continuity, blurring the boundaries between spaces, while the walnut panelling on walls and slats on the ceilings add a classic elegance,” he says.

The contrast between neutral cream and bronze hues, combined with varied textures and materials, creates a striking palette of shades and structures—all shifting and changing with the home’s intake of natural light throughout the day, “producing an almost impressionistic image.”

The open-plan dining and living area features the Ritzwell MCM dining table by Shinsaki Miyamoto alongside a row of Metropolitan chairs by Larsen & Bender Madsen. The space also features a Palma pendant light by David Pompa and Gubi Pacha lounge chairs.

The living room features the Cassina Sengu sofa designed by Patricia Urquiola.

The home is also shaped by several iconic design pieces, such as the Ritzwell MCM dining table by Shinsaki Miyamoto, a row of Carl Hansen & Son Metropolitan chairs by Larsen & Bender Madsen, and the Palma lamp by David Pompa. On the first floor, Japanese ceramics and wooden features are fastened by Gubi armchairs in upholstered boucle fabric and a Cassina Sengu sofa by Patricia Urquiola.

“The project is based on the beauty of imperfections of natural materials and handmade furniture, ceramics and decorations,” Opala reflects. The use of materials plays a significant role in combining and uniting the project while also allowing for the separation of specific zones throughout,” he says.

Artwork enhances each space’s interior aesthetic and atmospheric quality; curated with the client to showcase their private collection of souvenirs and trinkets from their travels. Driven by a philosophy that seeks to understand each client to fully personalise each design, LOFT has achieved an exceptional level of detail in the Chy House. The dialogue between the physical form and the natural environment continues to inspire joy and a sense of belonging.

The bed was specially designed to incorporate the spirit of “sensitive modernism.” It is paired with an armchair in a restored Polish vintage design from the 1930s. A painting by LOFT’s creative director, Konrad Opala, and the Louis Poulsen PH2/1 table lights complement this space.

The bathroom features stone contrasted and complemented by timber and ceramics.
