Burleigh Pavilion by Alexander &CO.

  • Interior design studio Alexander &CO. reinvent an iconic Australian beach pavilion on the Gold Coast.

Evoking a sense of 1970s beach nostalgia, the Burleigh Pavilion is the refurbishment and partial construction of an illustrious ocean-facing building in the heart of Burleigh Heads. The venue is divided into three spaces – The Pavilion, Beach Bar and The Tropic restaurant – surrounded by holiday campsites, a swimming pool and skate park.

With its robust structure and prime location, Alexander &CO. have reimagined this existing building into a quintessential Australian bistro on the coast.

The client requested a design that reflected childhood Burleigh Heads memories, so Alexander &CO. in collaboration with stylist Studio CD focused on design that is sympathetic to retro Palm Springs architecture. This is revealed from the entrance shrouded by a concrete canopy, where two palm trees and pink metal lettering announce its presence.

Inside, polished concrete floors and crazy paving form the base of the 1200sqm space, with a central open kitchen inviting guests to eat, stand and drink. Circular concrete block booths, wide poles and vaulted ceilings nod to past pavilion structures in Burleigh, while contemporary rattan ceiling panels demonstrate the transition from old to new.

A standout feature of the pavilion is the main beach bar, with high seating, white umbrellas and expansive ocean views. Built for the Queensland climate, the lower floor of the building has been constructed to accommodate storms, with removable bi-fold glazing.

Pale pink and brass accents appear throughout while colourful terrazzo tabletops, mismatched diningware and obscure artwork create a design that is both eclectic yet endearing. As part of Alexander &CO.’s new series of low-cost material fit-out projects, Alexander &CO. have maintained the existing external materials to maximise efficiency and in turn reduce wastage. This is also evident through the incorporation of sustainable materials and low VOC fabrics.

Through bold tonal hues, an abundance of natural light and harnessing the beachside locale, Alexander &CO. have successfully captured a 1970s aura in a venue that is perfect for summer evenings with friends and family.
