At first glance, minimalist spaces are too often termed stark or sterile. But we at est are firm believers in reducing the objects in your home as the best path to stripped-back sophistication and simple functionality; providing an aesthetic reprieve from the chaos that clouds daily life. If we can take a leaf out of any designer’s book on this approach, it’s Crosby Studios. The creative Russian firm have previously guided us through designing brutalist architecture and space saving abodes for a minimal oasis. In Moscow, Crosby Studios have taken this minimalist motto and run with it, to design a custom made and curated apartment.
DESIGN & PHOTOGRAPHY Crosby Studios
Crosby Studios are a jack of all trades — and a master of design. Founded by Russian artist and architect Harry Nuriev, the firm has a reputation for exceptional concepts that blur the lines between art and design. The studio’s revered work takes credit from the studio’s ability to it be across all facets of design — from web to brand strategy — revealing a sharp eye in separating the superior from the mediocre. On the interiors front, the studio’s expertise lies in creating functional sculpture, to mould familiar forms into something entirely new.
The Bolshoy Levinsky Apartment is calming with its simplicity and symmetry. Crosby Studio’s artistic restraint encouraged clean lines, crisp surfaces and an easy flow throughout. The flat slab cabinetry is a thoughtful consideration to this endeavour, minimising the visual noise of hardware and raised panels. Even more considered is the custom made; from the kitchen island bench, to the bed and bathroom sink and vanity. Forget the clutter that collects dust, each space generates visual interest by texture, in materiality and the metallic. A special mention goes to the brass-wrapped bench, Vola tapware and dusty pink bedhead, injecting a dynamism into the otherwise monochrome palette.
Scratching below the surface of the pared-back often reveals a complexity unseen. In tune with this notion is the Bolshoy Levinsky Apartment, emphasising the importance of every element —where nothing aggressively competes for your attention. True to Crosby Studios form, this Moscow apartment has said goodbye to the superfluous and hello to the streamlined. Homes like these are a pertinent reminder that we can live comfortably with far less.
