Nestled in the picturesque Adelaide Hills, this pavilion style design boldly crosses the terrain. Building on from an existing template, the creative crew at Black Rabbit Architecture and Interiors have designed a significant addition to accommodate family life while taking advantage of the surrounding natural landscape.
Led by a dramatic exterior form that acts as a canvas to the lush green backdrop, the home is elevated from its modest origins to a thoughtful, stunning design characterised by interesting protrusions, cladding and architectural features. The transitions between outside and in are gentle yet defined, with black and white interiors forming a striking relationship. These base colours are warmed with timber detailing throughout, while concrete tiles complete the overall palette. Natural light streams inwards with help from large windows and skylights, generating a real sense of comfort and wellbeing in this home.
Inside, a hallway frames a perfectly-formed pod securely anchored into the building’s foundations. Housing the fully tiled powder room, pantry and laundry while cleverly framing out the kitchen, the material palette of the pod marries to the hallways’ contemporary black joinery, creating a well-tuned narrative. Given the location’s chilly temperatures over the cooler months, the two-sided fireplace that services both the main living and dining area is a smart choice for both maintaining a comfortable temperature while also setting a relaxed ambience. The exciting inclusion of a sunken lounge cocoons the residents in the changing seasons, and framed with panoramic windows provides a space where hours could be whiled away admiring the views.
From the living area bedrooms stem in either direction. The main sleeping quarters offer three detailed bedrooms, additional bathrooms and a necessary ‘man cave’ as required from the client brief. Beyond the living area the parent’s retreat can be found and come complete with a stunning dressing room lined with storage. Adjacent, the main bedroom suite takes in the natural greenery of the landscape, creating a serene space to wake up in.
In many ways, this is a house of retreat; the revitalising green outlook, an abundance of natural light and room for all – well-considered design that provides a place to relax and rejuvenate every day.
