A Case Study Kitchen Defined by Details

We take a closer look at the kitchen design elements of Terra Firma House by Robson Rak, where the seamless integration of sleek obsidian black appliances forms a case study for innovation and design — elevating the home’s central hub.
Melbourne-based studio Robson Rak, led by principal architect Kathryn Robson and principal interior architect Chris Rak, captures a commitment to premium craftsmanship and thoughtful design. This philosophy is reflected in Terra Firma House, where the kitchen strikes a harmonious balance between lasting, durable materials and contemporary design. Innovation and functionality form the foundation of this hardworking, family-oriented space.

At the heart of the home, the open-plan kitchen and dining area reveals Robson Rak’s hallmarks of refined materiality and understated elegance. Layering robust materials, such as green-stained timber veneer cabinetry and marble-topped benches with terracotta floor tiles to anchor the kitchen space, the kitchen transitions seamlessly into the dining area, where softer elements like earth-toned leathers are introduced. “The materials in Terra Firma will age gracefully with time, just as they would in the natural world,” Robson explains.

Grounding the nature-inspired palette, Miele’s sleek obsidian black appliances introduce a modern edge to the kitchen. Selected by Robson Rak for their minimalist aesthetic, the Miele’s VitroLine series creates a subtle yet striking contrast against the organic textures, blending seamlessly into the home’s modern interiors. Renowned for their performance, these appliances enhance both the functionality and sophistication of this family home.
