No, this isn’t The Apartment in NYC, or The Apartment in Copenhagen. This apartment is in Antwerp, Belgium..of course?! The brainchild of husband-and-wife team Tim Van Geloven and Ilse Cornelissens, Graanmarket 13 is a conceptual space occupying an entire townhouse in Belgium. Originally opened in 2010 as a place ‘where everyone would feel at home’, the very generous owners have since moved out of the building and now rent the apartment out to design discerning travellers from around the globe looking to live like a local – for a short while - in this beautiful city.

Located in the middle of the city and in the heart of Antwerp’s chicest neighborhood, Graanmarkt sits proudly on a cobbled street. From the outside this building looks like any other neoclassical residence. On the inside, however, a poured concrete stairwell leads up to the stunning interiors designed by one of our favourite Belgium architects, Vincent Van Duysen.

An old ginkgo tree graces the rooftop garden and provides herbs and honey for famed chef, Seppe Nobels, to use in the Graanmarkt 13 restaurant located in the basement of the building. The ground floor houses the Graanmarkt concept store that sells fashion and accessories sourced by Cornelissens and Van Geloven’s during travels. The store offers furniture and homewares designed by Michaël Verheyden and notebooks by Astier de Villatte.

With four bedrooms, two bathrooms, a living and dining room, the duplex apartment, offers panoramic views from large open windows and a sprawling terrace. Breakfast made of fresh local products is brought to the apartment every morning and guests are encouraged to utilize the fully equipped kitchen on their own.

‘I look to achieve sensibility of working harmoniously in merging and combining volumes,’ explains Van Duysen. ‘It’s about creating warmth, atmosphere and beauty through a careful attention to the inherent qualities in materials and how they sit, both with one another and in the space itself.’ There’s no doubting that Graanmarkt is the work of a grand master.
